- Peaceful eco-friendly bell tents in the Charente countryside
- A 10-minute drive from the Haute Charente lakes and an adventure park
- Cooking facilities and a woodburning stove provided with each tent
The Charente countryside has lots to get stuck into: gorgeous lakes, local farm shops, thermal baths, bicycle trails… and perhaps most important of all for holidaymakers, a getaway in the form of peaceful, eco-friendly bell tents. In a wildflower meadow surrounded by a forest, Au Pré Fleuri Eco Retreat is pretty and peaceful, and has a low environmental footprint.
Each of the bell tents has a private eco-friendly bathroom with solar-powered hot water and a composting toilet. Full cooking facilities are on hand to cook up meals sourced from the region’s many farm shops. There’s a woodburning stove too – so it’s very cosy indeed.
The meadow is just 10 minutes’ drive away or a half-hour bike ride from the lakes of the Haute-Charente, where wild swimming, watersports, beaches and bars should get you in the holiday mood. Alternatively, you could lounge on a hammock and be entertained by the bees going about their business, the bird chorus from dawn till dusk or starry nights back at base.
For outings, set off to see the 1st century AD thermal baths at the Cassinomagus - Archaeological Park (25 minutes’ drive) or strap in for some heights on the catapult, bungee jumps and tree-climbing obstacle course at Aventure Parc Lacs de Haute Charente (10 minutes).
Grand French castles aren’t far off either; the 11th-century Château de La Rochefoucauld (20 minutes) and the 13th-century Chateau De Rochechouart (25 minutes) are among the well-preserved sites locally. Foodies, there’s always bound to be a local market sometime soon; for something fancier, there are Michelin-starred restaurants and farm-style eateries a short drive away.
