- A peaceful and leafy site set on the banks of the Charente river
- At the edge of Jarnac town centre, a 20-minute drive from Cognac
- Swimming pool access; cognac tasting and cultural activities
Eat your way through the tasty treats of the Cognac region with a stay at Camping de L'Île Madame, a site 20 minutes’ drive from the city and a 10-minute walk from the centre of Jarnac in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
Adults can get their cultural kicks wandering about the historic centre of this settlement, dipping in and out of shops selling artisanal chocolate and an array of vineyards and cellar doors – often set in handsome 18th-century homes – where Cognac and Charentais wines are created and sold.
Got small guests not quite old enough to partake in the area's boozier delights? Games are on hand to keep the kids busy at Camping de L'Île Madame, and the excellently placed park is also on the Charente river for swims and boat-based messing about – pursuits best tackled before you sample the local tipples, perhaps. As a little extra bonus, guests also have free access to the public leisure centre next door, which has two heated pools and a grass terrace.
For architectural aficionados on tour, there are lots of small villages along the Charente that are worth seeking out, and it's also worth checking out the abbeys of Saint Etienne of Bassac and Châtres, both around 10 minutes’ drive away.
Facilities here are designed for all comers, with a baby-changing area and access for people with disabilities.

Local attractions
Tour the home of maybe the most famous cognac of them all at the Courvoisier SAS museum (by appointment only, book online) a five-minute walk from the site. Other activities to embrace without jumping in the car include floating along the Charente river from Jarnac, 10 minutes away, where boats and canoes are available to hire.
Also in town is the François Mitterrand Cultural Space, an art gallery dedicated to the former French president who lived in the settlement back yonder – his old house is also open to visitors who want to learn more about the leader.
You’ll need your wheels for trips to the Dolmen de Garde-Épée neolithic monument and Château de Triac, the latter a castle with wine tasting available, both 10 minutes’ drive away. The abbeys of Saint Etienne of Bassac and Châtres, two grand old buildings, are the same distance away for more quick outings.
Stately structures are also to be seen in Cognac (20 minutes), including the royal castle and the old town's handsome houses. And if you haven’t had enough of the city’s famed liquor just yet? The Musée des Arts du Cognac is dedicated to the history and production of the esteemed drink.
