Worried about winding up with a boring holiday? That won’t be a problem at Les Pilotis du Cognac, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Bourg-Charente in Poitou-Charentes – there’s piles to do (it’s funny in French…). Explore the Charentes region from Les Pilotis: take to the country roads and banks of the Charente river on foot or by bike, or get out on the water to see it all by canoe. If that sounds too active, pull up a piece of riverbank and cast out a line to see, or head to the nearby golf course (less than five minutes’ drive) to play a round. Back on site, you can get nice and relaxed: have a leisurely game of ping pong or rack up the points in pétanque before taking a dip in the heated on-site pool (open during the high season). You can also reserve the private relaxation area on for its hot tub, sauna and aromatherapy, and its library full of books and magazines... Once you start to feel that familiar gnawing in your stomach, grab some supplies in one of the supermarkets in Cognac or Jarnac (both around 10 minutes away) and either cook them in your private kitchen or fire up the barbecue. If you’d prefer to have someone else look after the meal plan, there are plenty of restaurants within 15 minutes of Les Pilotis to try.

Liked: Very helpful and friendly owner. Quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: The facilities were really clean but I would have liked a toilet seat. The showers are private and outside which I think would be lovely in summer.

Liked: We had a fabulous time in Les Pilotis du Cognac. There was a nice playground for our girls to play in. We had had a long day driving and took full use of the sauna and jacuzzi last night. We got a great recommendation for pizza from Franc and his wife who were so lovely. Plenty of space to put up our awning and hook up to electricity. This morning we had ordered croissants and a baguette- all of which were delicious. Also excellent Wi-Fi. Very secure. I would highly recommend this gem.

Disliked: Google maps. Follow the dot. Ignore the road they bring you once you’re very close.

Liked: Very friendly hosts. Lovely location with good facilities. Host orders bread at your request for delivery each morning (still warm on arrival). Good electric pitch with easy access to water etc. Would definitely stay here again. About 30 mins from Cognac and 15 minutes Jarnac (shops).

Disliked: Site needs a little finishing work (does not detract from experience). A little difficult to find the correct entrance on arrival (its round the back).

Liked: We were made extremely welcome by the lovely couple that own the site. The site was very clean and well maintained. There is a sauna and jacuzzi that you can rent for yourselves to use for 1 hour inside a purpose built chalet. And an indoor pool.

Liked: Everything. Terrific welcome from the owners. Peaceful. New facilities, immaculately kept. The cycling is superb both to Jarnac and beyond and into Cognac mostly off road. Swimming pool is a bonus after cycling.

Liked: What an amazing find, brilliantly located for biking into Cognac. Only meant to stay one night extended to two on our drive through. Amazing pool, and just a total hidden gem had it all to ourselves.. bikes into Cognac twice velo path on the doorstep.. awesome find!

Liked: Lovely location, really peaceful - a hidden gem. The owners were very friendly and welcoming despite our limited French and their limited English. There has been a lot of thought given to the needs of guests and a lot of really nice touches in all the facilities on site. The pool and spa were top quality; we paid for a sauna session and it was worth every penny. We only stayed one night en route to St Emillion but will definitely return and stay lo by er so we can explore the area. Note - if using satnav it will direct to the front of the property and access to the camp site is at the rear.

Local attractions

This is cognac country. Start with tours and tastings at Courvoisier, about five minutes’ drive from Les Pilotis du Cognac, then head in to Cognac for the same at Camus, Remy Martin, Martell, Hennessy and Cognac Meukow. While in Cognac, stick around for more than the brandy – there are plenty of museums, and the Château Royal de Cognac, Jardin Public and La Maison de la Lieutenance are must-sees, plus the scenic medieval streets are super strollable. Once you step away from the cognac of it all, there’s still plenty to do in the area around Les Pilotis. Montendre (around 50 minutes away) is a worthy visit, with its old buildings, château and lake where you can hire pedalos and canoes or laze on the beach – to see everything, make sure to call in to the tourist office for a guided tour. Stick with history with stops at the Roman ruins at Saintes, the châteaux de Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and de la Roche Courbon, and the stunningly scenic village (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) of Saint-Jean-d’Angély, or stick with the scenic at Pons and Jonzac. Kids chafing at the bit? Try a trip to the coast (roughly an hour away) or stick closer to home at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark.
