Go angling, have a woodland wildlife wander or get out on wheels... all are splendid options at Au Soleil de Picardie, two kilometres from Vailly-sur-Aisne in the Aisne department.
For all are a bit more extensive than you'll find on other sites: the fishing is in two ponds on site as well as in two scenic spots close by; the site woodland is a private arboretum with thousands of trees, and the bikes are of not only the traditional variety but of electric and quad too.
Au Soleil de Picardie is a family-friendly and leafy site, between the Champagne vineyards and the forest of Retz, 20 minutes' drive from Soissons and 40 from Reims. If you seek a capital day out and don't mind a longer drive, a zip along the N2 will have you in Paris in under two hours.
The park covers six hectares of countryside including thosr two fishing ponds (filled with roach, carp and pike) as well as a private arboretum of 3,000 trees around a habitat home to herons, ducks, rabbits and squirrels; take the kids on a woody walk to see what species they can spy. More fishing is at the Aisne river and the local canal, 500 metres away.
Facilities include a playground and a ping pong table, as well as bike, electric bike and quad bike hire subject to availability. There's a picnic and barbecue area for guests' use; for supplies and fresh local produce, a Friday market is in Braine just under 10 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions
Town and city days are your top pick from here, such as to Soissons, the ancient Roman settlement that's one of the oldest towns in France. There's also Reims, a handsome and historic city with four UNESCO-listed buildings: the cathedral, the Palace of Tau, the Abbey of Saint-Remi and the Saint-Remi history museum. Paris is an hour and three quarters' drive away.
Other local attractions and activities include the Chemin des Dames, 30 kilometres of 'ladies paths' made up of tunnels and caves used by women during the three Aisne battles of World War I. Memorials and cemeteries are along its route and guided tours run from the visitor centre; access the path from the Chemis des Dames Dragon's Cave museum, 20 minutes' drive away.
For more active adventures, the tree-climbing adventure park Acroarbres is within 25 minutes' drive outside Soisson, and 560 kilometres of walking and hiking paths meander through Retz forest, 35 minutes away.
