  • Spacious, peaceful pitches five minutes' drive from Saint-Gervais
  • Within half an hour of Noirmoutier island and Vendée beaches
  • Salt marsh bike paths nearby; 5km from Vélodyssée coastal path
The Vendée area is one that’s very well endowed with gorgeous beaches – tot up all the sandy stretches along the region’s edges and you’ll come to around 140 kilometres in total. And fingers crossed you’ll have the weather to go with it, as the region proudly boasts the runner-up title in the contest for sunniest part of France. With all this goes a rather fab challenge: to get out and see any many of those beaches as you can during your hols. And if you’re up for that, it makes sense to start from a strategic position such as Camping Le Fief Angibaud, five minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-Gervais (a petite place, but one that’s home to a bakery, butcher, bar and a couple of restaurants). From this laidback rural spot there’s easy access to lots of the area’s finest beaches, including the resorts of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Pornic, and the scenic island of Noirmoutier. Stacks of activities for all ages can be had around each of those towns, and there are walking/bike paths closer to home in the salt marshes a couple of kilometres away. And even closer than that is the site’s own activity area, where folk gather for games of table tennis and pétanque and les enfants can scramble about at the playground. If the day’s provided enough activity already, merci, wander over to the barbecue area for a bit of alfresco cookery; pitches here are pleasingly sizeable, so you’ll have plenty of space to set up a table to dine in style if you so desire.

Great spot for a quiet break. Friendly owners, clean facilities, and yummy bakery. Some say pitches can be tricky in the wet. Good base for exploring.

Liked A beautiful campsite with huge pitches. So quiet and peaceful and the hosts were wonderful. Fresh bread can be ordered and collected every morning which was fantastic. Lots of trees for shade. Small swing and pétanque pitch kept our children happy and loads of room to run around in front of the tent. Highly recommend.

Liked This is a really peaceful, quiet pitch in the countryside. The pitches themselves are really spacious. We had a warm welcome and we’re shown around the facilities and given some tips on where to visit. The facilities were clean and modern, loved seeing the bats flying around at dusk.

Disliked This is a lovely rural site which means you will have to drive to the beaches and Island (which is well worth a visit) Not really a negative more something to be aware of.

Liked A lovely, small, peaceful site which was exactly what we wanted for our first trip away without kids. The pitches are large with access to several water pipes. The toilets and showers are housed in an old barn but don’t let that put you off as they were clean and the water was hot and powerful, it’s also a good place to retreat to if the weather is bad. A washing machine and washing up sinks were available as was bread etc to order. The owners Andy and Jeanette were very helpful pointing out areas to visit. It doesn’t have all the extra frills such as a pool , snack bar or pool, so if you don’t want those as we didn’t, it’s perfect! Enjoy.

Local attractions

So, those beach resorts… two of the best are Saint-Jean-de-Monts (20 minutes’ drive) and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie (half an hour), both home to long sandy swathes and packed with watersports options including paddleboarding, surfing and land yachting. Fill in the gaps between Atlantic paddles at nearby Explora Parc adventure park, Atlantic Toboggan waterpark or the Bourrine du Bois-Juquaud eco museum. More coast? Set out to pedal along the Vélodyssée coastal bike path (or at least part of the way… it stretches to 1,200 kilometres in its entirety…) or take a drive over to Noirmoutier island (half an hour). The original causeway’s only accessible at low tide – but if you do get stranded, there are worse places to be than an island packed with quiet beaches, bike paths and oyster shacks (and a modern bridge is open all the time if you do want to leave). Between the site and the coast is an area of salt marsh that’s excellent for walks and bike rides, or canoe paddles from Sallertaine (10 minutes).
