Zip between the beach, forest and marsh landscapes during a stay at Camping Plein Sud, a family-friendly site in the Vendée a 25-minute walk from the Plage de la Parée du Jonc beach and a five-minute drive from the seaside resort of Saint-Jean-de-Monts. This Pays de la Loire park has a heated open-air swimming pool, plus a kids’ paddling pool and a small waterpark, for spending days cooling off outdoors; active types might like to flit between here and the playgrounds, multisports pitches, games room and bowling green. For chilling out, the bar has a big-screen TV and a library’s available. For livelier times, entertainment’s organised in high season and in the quieter months access to the indoor swimming pool, sauna, hammam and whirlpool at the park’s sister site is free of charge. The course at Golf de Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a 10-minute drive away for sessions on the green. Activities also off site include horse riding, windsurfing and sea fishing at the dune-backed Plage de la Parée du Jonc beach, sandwiched between the Plage de la Davière and Plage de la Tonnellé beaches. Wander down to these scenic spots on foot or rent one of the park’s bikes and zoom over in approximately five minutes. You could also flit to the Feeling Forest trails, a 20-minute drive away, for roams under the boughs of trees. Camping Plein Sud also has a morning bakery delivery service for tasty breakfasts, and a grocery shop selling essentials like milk. There’s also a laundry area and baby-changing amenities.

Local attractions

Saint-Jean-de-Monts (five minutes' drive) is a lovely coastal town with lots of sandy beaches including the popular Plage des Demoiselles and Grand Plage. Beyond the seaside, take on the trails in the canal-covered Marais Breton wetlands and salt marshes, then climb up to the Kulmino water tower for views of said landscapes. For more nature, the Bay of Biscay's Noirmoutier island is a 30-minute drive away – get here over the Passage du Gois causeway, only accessible at low tide, to check out the prehistoric artefacts at the 12th-century Château de Noirmoutier and the underwater creatures at the Sealand Aquarium. Bounce over to the beaches here before seeking out some more at Ile d'Yeu, an island reachable by boat from Fromentine (15 minutes). Once you’re done breathing in the salty sea air, aim for the amusement parks in the vicinity, like Mickey Boy Park (10 minutes) and Atlantic Toboggan waterpark (15 minutes). Famed spots like the Planète Sauvage zoo and the Puy de Fou theme park are a 50-minute drive and an hour and a half, respectively.

Fully-serviced grass and sand site

Liked: Staff great and very helpful, good size pitch for our van and tent/ awning. Short walk to the beach, sandy and level. Lots of cycle paths nice town with shops. Use of indoor and outdoors pool across the road at another campsite along with steam room and sauna.

Disliked: No handwashing soap in toilets, no loo roll.

Liked: The layout of the site was good with each pitch having adequate privacy without being isolated from other campers. The site facilities were ideal for us being grandparents with 4 year old grandson.

Liked: We really liked the pool and the proximity to the beach which was 20 minutes walk away.

Disliked: There wasn’t an onsite shop as sorts, so you had to drive to everything.

Liked: Le côté familial du camping, notre emplacement était grand et ombragé, nous étions à côté des sanitaires et des aires de jeux pour les enfants. L'animatrice du mini club était exceptionnelle, ma fille a adorée sa semaine. Les animations proposées par le camping étaient très sympas. Une superbe équipe de l'accueil à l'entretien, très sympathique et bienveillant.

Disliked: Pas vraiment d'endroit pour les ballades de nos chiens du matin et soir, en bordure de départemental

Liked: Generous pitches, each with their own electric and water. Good entertainment if you want it. Really close to an awesome beach and also close to the cycle routes. Wish we had stayed longer!

Disliked: Children would have liked a better pool (slides etc) but we thought it was nice. Clean and well presented.

Liked: Pool was clean and staff were friendly.

Disliked: Very difficult to manoeuvre a car and caravan - either 2 right angle bends or a hairpin bend. No on site bakery. All Boulangerie goods had to be reserved a day before from the sister site across the road. No shop on site and the one in the sister site had approximately 11 items. WiFi non existent. Site size was neat.

Fully-serviced grass and sand site

Liked: The large landscaped pitch with services (tap, grey water drain) actually on the pitch. The cycle riding in the area was scenic with a lot of it off road. The beach was only a short ride or walk away and it was very nice. Very helpful staff.

Disliked: The chemical toilet emptying point was not the best. It was very cramped with difficult access to lift the drain cover. I used a tent peg extractor! The free wifi was very poor and couldn't cope on an evening presumably when greater demands were placed on it. Luckily the mobile data signal was strong.
