  • Peaceful family-friendly site two kilometres from Luçon
  • Half an hour's drive from the beach; an hour from Puy du Fou
  • Playground, pétanque and shop with bread sales and hot drinks
Stats alert: the Vendée region lays claim to nearly 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, over 1,000 kilometres of bike path, 140 kilometres of sandy beach and three national nature reserves. With those figures, even those who aren’t madly mathematical of mind can work out that it all multiplies together to make an excellent family break. If you can bear to do some addition as well, take a look at Camping La Clé Des Champs, two kilometres from the shops, restaurants and attractions of Luçon – the peaceful family-friendly vibes and handy location here are likely to push the site's score even higher, as are the spacious pitches of around 100m² each. In high season, days here kick off with the waft of fresh baking tipping you off that it’s time to head to the site shop for your daily bread and croissants. It’s open through the day too, with a collection of local products to buy and coffees or hot chocolates to sip. You can also pick up breakfasts and ice creams on site. Should you be hanging about on site with restless tiddlers, you can escort them to the playground or challenge them to a game of pétanque. Alternatively, go and say hello to the site's donkeys, who always appreciate being petted and brushed.

Liked: Pitch was a great size. Site was quiet at night and view of the stars in the sky was absolutely stunning (no light pollution). Toilet and washing up facilities clean and regularly checked. Use of washing machine very handy (they even sell a washing liquid pod for 1€ which saved money on buying a pack).

Disliked: As we were sited there for 3 weeks we thought the interaction with the site owners would have been greater, often they would walk past the pitch and not even say bonjour unless we said it first. Didn’t make the holiday any different (we had a great time)I know they possibly don’t want to impose on peoples holiday but the very fact that French people are often so polite and courteous and say bonjour when passing in the street it just felt a bit odd they didn’t do it.

Power optional grass and earth site (XL)

Liked: A small, quiet site just outside of Lucon. The pitches were big, with lots of natural shade provided by established trees. The unisex toilet/shower block was very clean, showers were hot and strong with plenty of hooks in the cubicles and we never had to wait. There was a small bar and communal outdoor seating area with small cafe tables and chairs by the reception which was very attractive. Christine and Herve were wonderful hosts.

Liked: A real gem of a find! A beautiful, quiet campsite with large, spacious pitches. Very clean areas including a fantastic barn for eating, playing games or just chilling. Lovely little area for table tennis, petanque and other games. A few minutes drive from the supermarket and easy reach of the more touristy beaches and areas. Brilliant area for walking, cycling or heading to the beach. The owners were lovely and very helpful - really couldn't ask for anything more.

Local attractions

There are some super walking trails to follow in this part of the Marais Poitevin, including one that leaves pretty much from outside the site. You may also like to take the two-kilometre trip into town to see Luçon’s cathedral, markets and animal-themed topiary, drive for 20 minutes to explore the Saint Denis du Payré National Nature Reserve or hop on a boat trip from the pier in Curzon (10 minutes' drive). Travelling on two wheels, there are vineyard trails around Mareuil-sur-Lay (10 kilometres), and a lengthier 32-kilometre ride to the beach. Those of a less intrepid disposition can drive to the beaches of L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer or La Faute-sur-Mer in half an hour or so for watersports, sea fishing or simply sunbathing on the long stretches of sand, or keep going to Les Sables d'Olonne or La Rochelle (both 50 minutes). Kids who aren’t keen on long car journeys will be chuffed to hear that it’s a mere 20-minute drive to the Indian Forest adventure park, O'Gliss waterpark and the treasure hunts at Le Château des Aventuriers theme park (covering pirates, dinosaurs and the Wild West, depending on your current fad). And if they can bear to stay in the car for an hour, Puy du Fou theme park is well worth the trip.
