It's free, quick and easy!
- Luxury cottages a few minutes' drive from Puy du Fou theme park
- Within an hour's drive of Nantes and Angers; several châteaux nearby
- Restaurant and bar with waterside terrace; kitchen in each cottage
If you’re planning to make the most of a full day out at Puy du Fou theme park, it makes sense to stay just down the road, non? Such a plan makes even more sense when you note the swish accommodation on offer at Domaine Mélusine, a few minutes’ drive from the park just outside Les Epesses.
Even if you’re not planning to visit the theme park at all, this Vendée site makes a fine place to stay – its luxury cottages are spread out over a 24-acre nature park, giving guests the independence of a self-catering stay combined with the sort of perks one might find at a smart hotel.
Not all of that space is given over to cottages, of course – a large swathe of it is covered with a pond that makes a particularly fine backdrop for drinks at the bar or dinner on the restaurant’s terrace, both of which look out over the water. (Each cottage has a kitchen and a dining area too for those times when you’d rather sort your own dinner; a small grocery store on site stocks basic necessities and there are several shops a couple of kilometres away in the town centre.)
Also around the site are not one but two play areas for the kids, plus space for games of football, pétanque and table tennis. Board games can be borrowed from reception for quieter times, along with all the kit you need for games of Vendée puck and Mölkky (a surprisingly tricky Finnish bowling game).

Local attractions
The big highlight around here is of course Puy du Fou theme park – France’s second most popular theme park has been voted best theme park in the world in the past, and with good reason. You’ll easily fill a day out at this history-themed park with displays in its themed areas, strolls around its nature park and a grand finale of one of its spectacular evening shows.
Stays here aren’t all about the theme park though – you could easily spend many days trotting around the likes of Nantes and Angers (both an hour’s drive away) or taking in the area’s many châteaux, including Château de Boistissandeau (15 minutes) and Château de Tiffauges (25 minutes).
If you’re more into outdoor time than historic wanders, aim instead for the 35-kilometre Vendée à Vélo cycle path, which passes not far away, hit the high ropes courses of Tepacap Vendée (25 minutes), hire canoes to paddle on the Sèvre river (half an hour) or try out various watersports at Lac de la Bultière (half an hour).
