- On the banks of a river in the stunning UNESCO Saint-Omer marshes
- Under 10 minutes' drive to Saint-Omer, 35 to Calais and 40 to Dunkirk
- Peaceful angling haven with fishing on site
Grand? Large? Very big indeed? These can all describe your lengthy to-do list with a stay at Camping Le Grand Large right on a river among the Saint Omer marshlands: boating and waterside walks are available right from the grounds, and its Pas-de-Calais setting is nicely nifty for days out and about around France's north coast, beaches and the UNESCO-listed marshlands.
And with luck, grand, large and very big indeed will refer to whoppers landed from the site, as the Saint Omer marshes are a veritable fishing haven too. Or you may care to turn your attention (and your binoculars) to the wildlife and birdwatching around this biosphere reserve, or have another boat trip, or take in one of the many local festivals...
Town and city days? Also big on any bucket list from here: Le Grand Large is four kilometres from the centre of Saint Omer, one of France's designated Towns of Art and History and a hugely handsome place for urban strolls. The nearest village, Salperwick, is a couple of minutes’ walk away; to go (much) larger, Lille is reachable in an hour.
Camping Le Grand Large is a peaceful and friendly site, 35 minutes’ drive from Calais and with easy access to roads. A reserved fishing area is on site for guests’ use; there’s also a playground, a communal barbecue and an area for pétanque.

Local attractions
To scenic Saint-Omer first, a traditional marshland town with quite a bit to see including the Notre Dame cathedral, the public gardens, the marketplace and town hall, and the swish mansions laid around the narrow streets. The Sandelin museum is also a good option for an afternoon: this lush 18th-century mansion has around 3,000 objects and works of art from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century, laid out over 21 rooms.
Another museum well worth a look is the Coupole d'Helfaut-Wizernes or Dome History Centre (15 minutes’ drive), set in a World War II bunker and disused chalk quarry five kilometres from Saint-Omer; there are tunnels to explore here, a big exhibition area and displays on war weaponry and life in occupied France. Tours are available in French, English, Dutch and German.
Much time too must be made to thoroughly investigate the Saint-Omer/Audomarois marshes, a UNESCO biosphere reserve made up of 160 kilometres of navigable waterways. Ask at the Saint-Omer tourist office (in Place Victor Hugo) for details on the many things to do around these rivers, from meeting the local boatmakers to walking the Fontinette locks to taking a canoe out from Salperwick half a kilometre from Camping Le Grand Large.
Towards the coast, Dunkirk is 45 minutes’ drive away.
