Want to explore as much of the Opal Coast as possible? Base yourself at La Planquette-Hideaway, an adults-only Pas-de-Calais hideaway that puts you in pole position for discovering the Bay of Somme beaches around Le Touquet. Alternatively, you may prefer to hang out under the shade of trees on this peaceful estate with its historic house, or limit your explorations to strolls through the lanes of riverside Fressin, the childhood home of French author George Bernanos and a gentle 20 minutes’ amble away from the site.
Accommodation is in roomy, canvas tents nattily decked out with double beds (all linens are provided), bedside lamps and cosy rattan seating. Lots of thoughtful design touches like rugs, antiques and ceramics pretty up your stay, and outside each tent is a picnic table and seating for alfresco dining. An eco-friendly composting toilet built using earth, straw and lime and a shower complete the roster of facilities.
If you fancy a decent meal showcasing regional menus, there are bistros and bars in the centre of neighbouring market town Capelle-lès-Hesdin (20 minutes’ drive), which also has a couple of large supermarkets for stocking up on comestibles.

Local attractions
Recharge your batteries with a wander around Fressin (20 minutes’ walk), set daintily on the side of the Planquette River; you can check out the stone sculptures in the 15th-century church of Saint-Martin or attend an open-air concert among the photogenic ruins of the town’s château.
Other local adventures could include sampling the goats’ cheese at Chèvrerie de la Planquette, or meandering around the madcap art installations and tree-shaded avenues of the Ô Jardin Paisible (both five minutes’ walk). Also accessible on foot are the fishing ponds at Les Etangs de Fressin (40 minutes).
If it’s the Opal Coast beaches that beckon, you can be in elegant Le Touquet in around 45 minutes by car. Once there, go sand yachting on the long sandy expanse, play a round on the challenging golf course or go shopping in the high-end boutiques of Rue Saint-Jean and Rue de Metz.
