  • Small family-friendly site with an outdoor pool in the Lot Valley
  • A 25-minute drive from Monflanquin; 35 minutes from Villeneuve-sur-Lot
  • Pétanque court, ping pong table and billiards on site; dog-friendly
You’ll be well on your way to village-hopping in the Lot Valley or tipsy afternoons in the Cahors vineyards when you stay at Camping Le Valenty in the Dordogne Valley. This small family-friendly campsite (run by owner Florent) is tremendously friendly. It’s tremendously green too, with trees and an organic vegetable garden; Florent likes to call it a ‘nugget of biodiversity’. As it's kept car-free, kids can make the most of the green setting and any dogs should have wagging tails too. Within all of this are some fine facilities, too. An outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by sunloungers and green spaces, plus there’s a paddling pool for smaller children to use. For sporty endeavours, there’s a pétanque court, a ping pong table and billiards… or just drive and find a suitable spot along the Lot for watersports, fishing, horse riding, a cycle or a walk. The closest winery is within walking distance of Camping Le Valenty. To down something of slightly more substance, grocery shops are five minutes’ drive away from the site. On your way around the square and arcades of the medieval bastide town Monflanquin (25 minutes), and other nearby medieval villages, you’re bound to come across lovely restaurants to try the local cuisine too. Villeneuve-sur-Lot, 35 minutes’ drive away, has lovely half-timbered houses along the Lot river, towers and a brick cathedral. One of the Lot’s many medieval castles is also 10 minutes’ drive away: Bonaguil Castle, surrounded by dense forest. And if you’re more than willing to travel further away, track down strong red wines and an old town with a cathedral, gardens and a medieval bridge in Cahors, 50 minutes’ drive away.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass site

Liked: Friendly greeting, quiet.

Disliked: We did not have WiFi as advertised on pitch up, when we asked we were told it's rural - no WiFi! We paid for WiFi as advertised ! It was the most expensive we have paid in France for very few facilities - only 1 working toilet & shower!

Local attractions

Pining for a day of simple family amusements? Parc en Ciel (25 minutes’ drive) has a handful of tree-climbing courses, a zipwire and a wild swimming spot. Walygator Sud-Ouest (an hour and five minutes) has rollercoasters and rides for bigger thrills. Perhaps you’re trying to narrow down exactly which of the Dordogne Valley’s villages to visit first. Pujols (40 minutes), a medieval village on a hilltop over Villeneuve-sur-Lot, is a good place to start – as is Rocamadour (an hour and a half), a small place in the hills, with a basilica, a monkey park and a bird park. Saint-Cirq -Lapopie (an hour and 20 minutes) is yet another stunning village, set along the Lot river with a watchtower and medieval alleys, squares and arcades. After all of those hilly sojourns, take your wanderings underground. Gouffre de Padirac (an hour and 35 minutes), dubbed the Devil’s Hole by locals, is a 75-metre cave with limestone caves and an underground river with a fleet of flat-bottomed boats ready and waiting.
