  • Family-friendly site set among oak trees in the Dordogne valley
  • Under five minutes’ walk to Monkey Forest and 20 to Rocamadour centre
  • Heated pool, play area, multisports field, pétanque and table tennis
Off on a pilgrimage to the UNESCO-listed Black Madonna statue in the Midi-Pyrénées? Or just on a jaunt in the Dordogne valley? Either way, park up in the four hectares of Camping Les Cigales, a kilometre and a half from Rocamadour, for a stay among the oak trees and dry stone walls in this lovely Lot department location. Along with all the sightseeing waiting for you outside the park, there’s oodles to do on base too, with a heated swimming pool and paddling pool (extra charges apply), a multisports field and a play area with swings, slides and trampolines to get stuck into. There’s also table tennis, table football and a pétanque court, and a big screen is often set up for outdoor cinema showings under the sun or stars. Worked your way through the facilities? Roam the 20 minutes or so to Rocamadour’s centre and meander around this medieval settlement overlooking the stunning Alzou canyon. You’ll be in good company: around 1.5 million people visit the place on an annual basis to scale the 226 steps of the Grand Escalier staircase and visit the Black Madonna in the UNESCO-listed Chapelle Notre-Dame. Restaurants are plentiful in town if you’re looking for lunch or dinner post-sightseeing, and the park has a snack bar for light bites. There’s also a baked goods delivery service to sign up for if you’re hankering after some Viennese pastries for breakfast…

Local attractions

Before pottering to parts of the area that are popular with pilgrims, tick a few spots closer to base off your bucket list. Visit the treetop-swinging macaques in Monkey Forest for starters (five minutes' walk/a couple of minutes’ drive away), then flit over to see the swooping eagles at the Rocher des Aigles bird park (five minutes). Next on the agenda is the clifftop village of Rocamadour and its series of Cité Réligieuse buildings (20 minutes’ walk). Pay your respects to the Black Madonna statue in the Chapelle Notre-Dame, following up with a roam up the ramparts of the 14th-century château for views over the whole area. Sneak a look at some of the older historical sights in the region too, like the Grotte des Merveilles cave (10 minutes’ walk) and its 20,000-year-old art. More subterranean explores are to be had at the Lacave and Padirac caverns (15 minutes’ drive) if you fancy heading a bit further afield.

Liked: Fantastic location 5 mins walk from bars, restaurants and views of rocamadour. 2 minute drive to fantastic ice cream and 10 minute drive to supermarkets.

Many great tourist destinations nearby including kayaking down the Dordogne (my personal favourite), Gouffre de Padirac, Grotte du Pech Merle (ancient cave paintings) etc.

Tent pitches are very well sized and provided plenty of shade from trees. Electricity and relatively cold tap water provided on every pitch.

Showers and toilets were immaculate and washing up area had plenty of stations so there was never a queue.

Numerous swimming pools on site - one large one and two smaller ones - all very clean. Didn't enforce the use of speedos despite what it says in the website!

The food truck on site had some delicious rotisserie chicken/pork and potatoes, but book early to ensure you get what you want as they do run out.

Disliked: Very little to dislike to be honest. Our pitch was not absolutely level, but it certainly wasn't enough to cause any sleeping or cooking issues. We also avoided the evening entertain as its geared towards the French (absolutely fair enough!) but that's about it.
