- Tree-shaded family-friendly site in the Dordogne Valley
- Quercyland waterpark 20 minutes' drive; Rocamadour half an hour
- Ping-pong tables, pool and games room; an hour's walk to the Dordogne
Peaceful and family-friendly Midi-Pyrenees site Camping Les Paillotes is named after the tiki-style grass huts scattered around the site. The vibe, however, is definitely more south-west France than Hawaii here. Tall trees provide plenty of welcome shade, and the food you’ll be eating at the picnic tables is more likely to be locally sourced cheeses and charcuterie than a poke bowl.
While you sample the beers and wines available at the on-site bar, the outdoor swimming pool and shady ping-pong table will keep the kids occupied. And you needn’t worry about them getting bored if the weather takes a turn for the worse: a games room has table football and a snooker table to keep them busy.
If you’ve come on holiday with your four-legged friend, you should be able to find plenty of trails in Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park (10 minutes’ drive), or a one-hour walk will take you to the banks of the Dordogne river, where you can reward yourself with a refreshing dip. If you fancy catching something for the barbecue, you can fish for rainbow trout, pike and salmon here (you’ll need a permit). And of course there’s no shortage of water-based activities like canoeing and paddleboarding.
The site has an amenities block with showers, a washing-up area and recycling points. Less than five minutes away by car, the village of Payrac has convenience stores for provisions, and a couple of casual restaurants.

Local attractions
On the banks of the Dordogne, Quercyland (20 minutes’ drive) is a large waterpark with twisty slides and multiple pools, as well as zorb balls, adventure courses and trampolines. If you manage to drag the kids away from the water, you can let them have a go at being cavemen at Prehisto Dino Park (20 minutes), before heading underground to see the rock formations at the Grottes de Carbonnières (20 minutes).
The village of Rocamadour (half an hour), clinging dramatically to a cliffside, is well worth a visit. A famed pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, it still houses the 200-step Grand Escalier (try going up on your knees, like a medieval pilgrim would have done…) and numerous churches and sanctuaries.
Wildlife enthusiasts will go bananas at La Forêt des Singes (half an hour), a conservation animal park dedicated to Barbary macaques. You can observe and learn about these endangered animals as they go about their daily life and feed them popcorn (supplied at the entrance). The Parc Animalier de Gramat (35 minutes) has more variety, with wolves, bears, deer and farmyard animals.
