  • Quiet family site set under trees at Camarès in the Hautes-Pyrénées
  • Hiking trails in Grands Causses Regional Natural Park 20 mins’ drive
  • Swimming pool and sports courts; communal barbecue and picnic tables
Peace and calm await in Aveyron, Hautes-Pyrénées… All you need to do is book a stay at Domaine du Rougier on the outskirts of sleepy Camarès village. Easily accessible on a gravel track from the road, the handful of pitches there are all shaded from the heat of the day under the trees of a two-hectare woodland estate. Despite the quiet vibe, guests of all ages will have plenty to do, from kids running around in the playground to everyone splashing about in the outdoor pool, playing tennis, baseball and ping-pong or walking any dogs in the landscaped parkland. And of course, if you don’t feel like doing very much at all, then snooze on the pool’s sun deck or take your favourite book to read on a bench under the trees – and if you’re still not chilled enough, book a session at the on-site spa. As well as several shady picnic spots about the parkland, there’s a communal barbecue where you can grill up alfresco meals and – should you feel like chatting – make new friends as you cook. Fridges are available for rental if you need to keep your food fresh, and when you require a replenishment of supplies, there’s a bakery for fresh bread and a grocery store 10 minutes’ walk away in Camarès.

Local attractions

If you have animal-mad family members, the site owners are happy to arrange farm walks to meet the livestock or lead pony rides through the park. You can also hire kayaks to paddle along the Dourdou de Camarès river (five minutes’ walk), and discover hiking routes or mountain-biking trails in the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park (20 minutes’ drive, there’s a secure bike store on site too). Gourmets night turn their attention to the local markets; there’s one in Camarès every Wednesday morning during July and August – go to sample local dishes like “aligot” (a cheesy potato fondue), or the famed Roquefort cheese produced in caves at Roquefort-sur-Soulzon (35 minutes). After all that activity, enjoy quiet moments of contemplation when you visit Cistercian Sylvanès Abbey (15 minutes), with its soaring vaulted roof and peaceful cloisters – and don’t neglect seeing the Priory of Granges (20 minutes), a wooden Russian chapel with glittering gold icons.
