  • Family site on an island between the Moselle and Canal des Vosges
  • Charmes town centre five minutes' walk; 35 minutes' drive to Nancy
  • Two play areas, beach volleyball, pétanque and skate park
It’s rare that you get to stay at a site that’s bordered on both sides by water – but that’s the lovely location of Camping L'Île aux Mille Charmes, on a narrow strip of land between the Moselle river and the Canal des Vosges on the edge of Charmes. This is a splendid setting for spending lots of time in the open air – there’s direct access to the leisure area, which has a skate park, a beach volleyball court and a pétanque court, along with two play areas (one for the tiddlers and the other for older kids). There are also plenty of options for hikes and bike rides, including a route taking you to the nearby Étang du Pâquis where you can fish for carp. On site, everything has been designed to make life easy – spacious pitches have access to a food shop, a launderette, a washing-up area and a wifi connection as well as two bathroom blocks with toilets and showers. For all other needs, it’s a mere five minutes' walk to the centre of Charmes for meals out or to pick up supplies for eats back at base – perhaps a picnic by the water or a barbecue at your pitch? Charmes is a lovely town for a wander, looking out for hints of its colourful history as you go, and it’s also a handy base for days out – from hikes through the Vosges mountains to strolls around the museums of Nancy. Just make sure you get back to the site in time to join in with the evening entertainment…

Liked: Very nice camping site with lots of amenities! Organized, clean and in a gorgeous location. Especially with kids, there's so much fun to have. The owners are very sweet and helpful, and really try to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Don't forget to order bread and brioche for the next morning, it's so worth it! Ps: regarding other reviews... If you can't deal with a few bugs, the weather, or are in need of a private bathroom, camping is probably not the choice for you!!!

Liked: Fijne camping, veel bomen, mooie speelplekken, goed sanitair, leuke bar, alles mooi verzorgd.

Liked: We stayed one night in our motorhome with electricity on way back to UK from Switzerland. The campsite was clean, with good facilities (toilet block, showers - no tokens required, hot water, laundry (not used by us) and a small bar. It is located between a canal and the Moselle River within walking/ cycling distance of the small town of Charmes. As we stayed one night as a stopover, it provided a restful place with all that we needed before our onward journey the following morning.

Liked: Large pitches, fantastic new facilities including washing machine. Bread ordered for next morning was delicious, range of pastries, quiche and sandwiches. Cool on site bar with wide range of artisan beers. Close to village centre, River and canal cycle network

Disliked: New sanitary block is a good distance from the middle of the site. sanitary block in the middle of the site is tired and extremely basic. Few water points making frequent visits to fill bottles etc

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: The owner was extremely rude. Asked for some dinner at 7pm after we done 5 hours of travelling and he said the service was finished when we could clearly see people eating. Not welcoming at all, facilities and the campsite are very average and the entire town smells horribly. Not a great place to stay.

Liked: Nice site.

Disliked: Although the site was large, we were all bundled up together with most of the site being left empty. Bar closed at 8pm. Toilets and showers were very outdated. Nothing worth seeing in Charmes town.

Cordialement

Local attractions

Bring your bikes along – the Voie Bleue cycle route (running from Luxembourg to Lyon) passes by the site, so you can cycle for as long as your legs will manage. If that's too daunting, try the shorter journey to Étang du Pâquis (15 minutes’ cycle) for some fishing. For walks, take to the Wild Moselle Regional Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) for gentle waterside strolls, or head out into the Vosges for hikes to waterfalls and lakes. To cool off afterwards, there's a lovely lake beach with watersports at Wam Park (20 minutes). For more water-based action, try the whitewater rafting at Base Natur’O (25 minutes). The countryside around here is fabulous – but the towns are great places to visit too. Mirecourt (20 minutes) is renowned as a town full of craftspeople, and one of the world’s violin-making hubs. Nancy (35 minutes) is another place that's worth a trip – you'll see lots of Art Nouveau architecture as you wander through the streets, and can learn more about the style at Musée de L’Ecole de Nancy.
