  • Lively family campsite edging Lake Vassivière in the Haute-Vienne
  • Direct access to Plage d’Auphelle; Peyrat-le-Château 10 minutes’ drive
  • Kids’ activities, watersports, ball games and evening entertainment
When you’re looking to keep the family happily entertained in summer, check out the list of activities at Camping Paradis Les 2 îles. Set on the edge of Lake Vassivière at Plage d’Auphelle beach, amid the lush greenery of the Haute-Vienne, there is so much to do here that you’d probably keep everybody occupied for a year. Kids are all taken care of in high season (July and August) with daylong activities, including parent-and-child workshops, treasure hunts, collage making, ball games, mini discos, bike rides around the lake… You get the picture. Likewise, there’s all sorts of watery fun to be had down by the lake, with paddleboarding, sailboarding, kayaking and fishing on the water. Back on site, you can join in exercise classes, hiking trips, sports tournaments and lively pétanque competitions by day, and in the evening listen play cards and bingo at aperitif time, enjoy a bit of campsite rivalry with quiz evenings and karaoke competitions, watch blockbuster films and dance to live music. Alternatively of course, you can take up position on the beach and simply laze in the sun. Do as much or as little as you want – it’s your holiday after all. Now for the practicalities: at reception there’s a grocery store selling all the everyday basics as well as regional produce, stuff for the beach, games and souvenirs. Depending on availability, there’s also a small selection of fresh salads and sandwiches.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Great to see this site on Pitchup as no others on the lake. A few problems with Pitchup which Isobel managed well and went to the trouble of making sure we were ok. The pitches are approx 50m from the beach and the swimming and activities very good.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Hire sailing dinghies at Club Nautique de Vassivière Port Crozat (15 minutes’ walk) to speed across Lake Vassivière, rent water skis from the Ski Nautique Club Auchaise Vassivière (25 minutes), or spend the day hiking around the lake on the way-marked Autours du Bois de Crozat (runs past the campsite). When you’ve had your fill of sporty activities, have a rest day and mooch around the lakeside town of Peyrat-le-Château (10 minutes’ drive), full of bistros and cafés for coffee stops. Sitting on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route, the village of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat (40 minutes) has a landmark Romanesque church with a spectacular bell tower and lots of pretty squares for people watching. Eymoutiers (20 minutes) is a medieval masterpiece with an eye-catching setting on the River Vienne and half-timbered cottages – don’t miss the vivid stained-glass windows and the ornate tiling on the vaulted roof of Gothic-era Collégiale Saint-Étienne church. For the very best of French modern art, check out the Espace Paul Rebeyrolle (also 20 minutes) close by, with its courtyard full of wacky sculpture and galleries full of surreal installations.
