- A 40-minute drive from the Valley of the Painters and from Limoges
- Boating, swimming and fishing from site; bar-restaurant and kids' club
Love lakes? Fond of forests? Penchant for painting? This top spot ticks every box. This woodland wonder of a site is right to next to a lake, the very same Lac du Pont à l’Age, a body of water so clear and easy on the eye you’ll be surprised to hear it’s manmade. You’ll spot it shimmering away through the trees all around this spacious forested site in Limousin, tempting you down for a paddle.
The lake is the hidden gem of this French site, obvs, but it’s got other things to crow about. Ice creams, drinks and snacks are dished up down at the water, along with belly-busting brasserie fare at the bar-restaurant. The recreation room beckons with its bar, table football and TV for indoor types, while the evening entertainment and activities for kids run throughout the summer months for those who like their antics handily arranged for them. A playground is also on site.
And as for the bigger, watery playground? Well, you’re moments away from sunning on the lake beach, fishing the waters or hiring pedalos, canoes and kayaks to traverse the waves. The lake makes for a splendid sunset stroll as well, especially if you head further along to see the dam and waterfall.
It’s a five-minute drive from here to the villages of Folles and Laurière for drinks, eats and groceries.

Local attractions
If you’re planning to spend a long time holed up in this forest idyll (and why not?) you might need to stock up in the bigger shops and supermarkets of Limoges (40 minutes’ drive). It’s well worth a day trip or two in any case, to visit the wildlife park inside the castle, stroll round the massive aquarium and see the cathedral it took six centuries to finish.
If you’re more into scenery than the city, a drive of 50 minutes gets you to Crozant, the arty hub for the Valley of the Painters. In the 19th century, Monet and hordes of other artists flocked to this spot where the Creuse and Sédelle rivers join under a ruined white castle. It’s every bit as paintable now so bring your crayons, peruse the artistic history in the visitor centre or just wander the numerous trails taking it all in. (Boat trips on the Creuse give you another perspective with less legwork.)
For wildlife watching, it’s around 50 minutes' drive from the site to the Parc Naturel Régional de la Brenne, a diverse wilderness of wetlands, prairies and moors home to such exotica as pond turtles and purple herons. There’s even wilder stuff of the tooth-bearing, treetop-grazing kind at Zoo Parc Reynou (also 50 minutes), while the furry team at Les Loups de Chabrières an hour away will have you wanting to take a wolf pack home with you.
