- Family-friendly farm site near Ladapeyre in rural Nouvelle-Aquitaine
- A 20-minute drive from Guéret and 40 minutes from Montluçon
- Dining room, daily breakfast, kitchen and woodland trails on site
La France (or 'L'Hexagone', if you want to get geometrical) is a pretty big place, measuring up at 643,801 square kilometres at the latest count. If you want to plonk yourself down right in the middle of this whopper of a country, then consider a stint at Camping Gallois Au Petit Bois, a friendly farm site a few minutes' drive outside Ladapeyre in the Creuse.
The set-up here is all about eating, chilled outdoor times and slow living. Take the time to tuck into a proper continental breakfast in the morning, then earmark an hour for strolls in the site's three hectares of woodland or, if you venture out for off-site jaunts, have a leisurely mosey around local markets. The seclusion of this place should help you slow down, unwind and start tuning into nature, particularly given the ultra-low levels of traffic noise and minimal light pollution after dark. If all that warms the cockles, you may also be pretty pleased to hear about the firepits strewn around the main pitch area.
Indoor facilities here include a dining room, a kitchen where you can prep, cook and store self-catered grub, accessible toilets and a lounge with sofas, bean bags and outdoor seating. If you need to stock up off-site, you're best off driving north towards Châtelus-Malvaleix (five minutes) where there's a small supermarket and a bakery. If lakeside leg-stretching is in order, though, you can also set out south for the quiet village of Ladapeyre (five minutes).

Local attractions
Weave your way through the countryside to Felletin (40 minutes' drive) and Aubusson (40 minutes), two rather fetching villages that share a rich history of tapestry-making. After seeking crafty inspiration in its independent textile centres (or picking up a piece of your own), carry on your (window-shopping) spree in Guéret (20 minutes), where the lively Thursday and Saturday markets come with ample opportunities to fill up stomachs and empty out wallets.
If traipsing around trying cheeses isn't to the taste of your little ones, perhaps Montluçon (40 minutes) could be the answer: with half a dozen castles scattered about, an escape room and a bowling alley – plus a pop music museum where parents can show just how with it they really are (or aren't) – there's quite a bit in this mid-sized town to keep tots entertained.
In this part of France you're never too far from a scenic stroll. Stand-out spots in the local area include Glénic (15 minutes), Ajain (10 minutes), Sainte-Feyre (30 minutes) and La Chapelle-Taillefert (30 minutes), which all have clearly waymarked and well-maintained trails.
