It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful site 20 minutes' walk from Dun-le-Palestel village
- In the Valley of the Painters area for scenic walks
- Pizza nights and table d'hôte dinners on site in high season
Seeking some splendid scenery? Your interest should be piqued by an area known as the Valley of the Painters – as the name suggests, many painters have been drawn to these parts over the years (among them one Claude Monet, who def knew a thing or two about landscapes).
Arty inspiration also lies in store here for those who’d rather snap away on their smartphone or camera, or simply stroll around in search of the best views. Artistic interests or non, a warm welcome awaits at family-friendly Camping Dun-le-Palestel, a 20-minute walk from the village of the same name.
This is a properly peaceful place – the owners have a policy of no noisy kids’ activities or loud music on site, so you can indulge in some good old rural peace and quiet. It's a spacious site with plenty of room to spread out, and has a playground for the kids (so they can frolic freely without danger of interfering with such things as barbecue proceedings or adult aperitif time), and a pool where all ages can cool off.
On summer evenings, pizza is sold on site a couple of times a week, and there’s a regular table d’hôte dinner where you can share a meal with fellow guests. A supermarket and bakery are in the local village.

Local attractions
There are, as you might imagine, heaps of gorgeous views to be seen around the Valley of the Painters – especially those where the woods meet the Creuse river. The best way to see them is to head out on the well-marked trails from Dun-le-Palestel, or from neighbouring villages Fresselines and Crozant, both around a 10-minute drive away.
The popular hike for most visitors around here is the Painters' Trail, a four-kilometre circular walk from Crozant, which has info boards along the way to explain the connection with various artists. Also in Crozant you can visit the ruined fortress and wander round the Lépinat Centre, where you can learn about about painters’ techniques in the artists’ studio, or pack the kids off to the activities and studios running throughout the year.
If you’d like to see the countryside from a different angle, hire canoes from Crozant to take out on the Creuse river or Lake Eguzon, or cruise down the Creuse on a boat trip to see some of the sights: mills, lakes and rock faces among them.
