It's free, quick and easy!
- Quiet site with direct lake access and floating inflatables
- Half an hour's drive from the Tours de Merle and surrounding gorges
- Boat hire and zipwire; summer bread deliveries and entertainments
Zip over to this one... At Domaine du Lac de Feyt, aerial adventurers can whizz their way right across the adjacent lake on a zipwire.
That’s one way of getting across; alternatives are canoes, stand-up paddleboards and pedalos, all hireable from the friendly proprietors of this lush lakeside spot in France’s Limousin region.
Then again, with direct access to the waters, the banks and the summertime inflatable floating obstacle course, you could just opt for splashing and sunbathing, or find yourself a quiet spot for the fishing of carp and pike (permits are sold at reception).
It’s a 20-minute drive into Argentat-sur-Dordogne, but no visitor to Domaine du Lac de Feyt need fret about waking early for a bread run, as baguettes and pastries are delivered every morning in the summer months. (Summer's also show time on this site, with regular live music acts, equestrian displays and barbecue parties.)
Extra helpings of aquatic excitement are up the road in Argentat’s Le Splash waterpark, whose slides, cascades and heated pools keep everyone happy, whatever their energy levels.
If you’re seeking something quieter, take a stroll around Les Jardins Sothys, a similar distance away, a finely scented combination of tourist attraction and plant research facility, where a series of themed botanical gardens gives visitors a full-on sensory experience.

Local attractions
For hikes, head over to the lookout point at Busatier rock for a jaw-dropping overview of the gorge-filled terrain, then get onto the multitude of nearby trails (half an hour's drive). Equally good for climbs and sights, and also half an hour off, the towers of Merle are a set of seven 12th- and 13th-century castles in varying states of ruin, surrounded by steep canyons and paths.
Should you want to poke round a castle in a better state of repair, sally forth to Château du Sédières, a smart 14th-century affair surrounded by forests and lakes, where fishing, mountain biking, walking and quad biking top off tours of the medieval interiors.
It’s the same distance to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, where as the name suggests, the river runs right by and cruises on traditional gabare barges make a great way to explore the waters.
Another spot that’s not exactly coy about its main attraction is Gimel-les-Cascades (50 minutes): walk the hill to see the waterfalls, then take a stroll round the stone-built town and castle.
Further off, but firm family favourites are visits to the clifftop village and religious sanctuary of Rocamadour, combined with eagle and falcon encounters at nearby Rocher des Aigles and wanders through the monkey-filled Forêt des Singes (an hour and a half).
