  • Small-scale, family-run site with mountain views near La Cabanasse
  • A 10-minute walk from the GR 10 and GR 36 hiking routes
  • Pétanque court, barbecue area and common room
Get a load of that fresh mountain air – La Cabanasse, like all of the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park, is pretty high above sea level (1500 metres, to be exact). The nearby Cambre d'Aze Massif must be one of the finest-looking landscapes in this part of France – head here if you fancy waking up to views of lush, tree-lined valleys and snow-capped mountains… Camping Rural Les Opilleres is a family-friendly kind of place: the number of pitches here is kept low to maintain the personal touch and ensure ample space for all. There are plenty of places to socialise here, too, with a barbecue patio, indoor common room and – naturellement – a pétanque court where you can meet your new neighbours. Well-maintained facilities like toilets and showers, meanwhile, are housed in old agricultural buildings to complete the rural vibe. That rural vibe may make you feel as though you're far removed from all urban life, but in fact a 10-minute walk takes you to the centre of town and Mont-Louis-la-Cabanasse station, a halt on the scenic Cerdagne branch line (better known by locals as Le Petit Train Jaune). There are also a couple of food shops and bars in town if you need to stock up or fancy sampling some local mountain grub.

Local attractions

This part of the world is a walkers' paradise – the GR 10 and GR 36 routes are both within a 10-minute walk of the site, while cross-border trails like the St James's Way are also close at hand. Plenty of local attractions can be visited from the site on foot: walk the half hour or so to nearby Mont-Louis if you fancy checking out the 17th-century citadel and the world's first solar oven.  Those who want to venture further afield but still want to leave the car at home can pick up the Train Jaune in town (a 10 minute walk). This heritage line is an experience in itself, especially for passengers who opt for the open-air carriages – the train twists and turns through the hills, passing over impressive viaducts and scenic mountain valleys. Nearby Villefranche-de-Conflent can be reached by train or road (40 minutes' drive) – both routes are scenic. Trips to this UNESCO-listed walled town can be combined with visits to the Grotte des Grandes Canalettes (45 minutes), a spectacular network of caves, or Vernet les Bains (40 minutes), where visitors can set out on trails with great views of the Canigou.
