This is such a fabulous part of France that the Spanish felt compelled to keep a little slice of it for themselves when the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed back in 1659 (hence the term ‘enclave’). And you’ll be able to see why when you have a little look around the area surrounding Camping L’Enclave – this family-friendly site is on the banks of L’Angust river in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park, a place of many scenic walking trails and other attractions.
Pick a pitch at this Pyrenees-Orientales site and you’ll be on the edge of the tiny village of Estavar (just big enough to have a shop and a restaurant), a couple of minutes’ drive from Llívia (over the border in that little enclave) and about 15 minutes from Font Romeu (back in France). It’s also in a handy position for visiting places like Lac des Bouillouses, Grotte de Fontrabiouse or the natural thermal waters of Dorres.
There’s a very peaceful atmosphere on site, with 10 acres of space to spread out across and plenty of shade from the native trees. Kids can be entertained at the various play areas or get stuck into kids’ club activities (held on mornings in the summer months) while the grownups fish for trout in the river or perhaps have a gentle game of boules. Teens, meanwhile, can join with like-minded fellow guests for afternoon and evening activities geared to their interests (perhaps a social barbecue or a campout in the mountains).
Other facilities on site include an outdoor pool with kids’ pool, and there’s a shop, several barbecue areas and a bar-restaurant to make sure everyone stays well fed.

There are some great walks nearby, but if you’re nervous heading out on your own then join one of several free hikes organised each week by the site – experienced guide Nicolas will show you the way.
For more outdoor adventures, book a paragliding trip with Vol’aime or get set to get very wet with a canyoning trip – both of these around about 10 minutes’ drive away. Parcours aventure Tyrovol (half an hour) is another good way to get the adrenaline pumping, but you could also stay closer to the ground to visit Lac des Bouillouses (35 minutes).
Calm things down for a while by planning a day out at Angles in Capcir animal park (half an hour), where you can meet native species like bears, wild boar, bison and deer. Or maybe you’d like to relax as the Romans did by soaking in the thermal waters of Dorres (15 minutes)?
