  • Family park half an hour's walk from Saint-Valery-en-Caux beach
  • Half an hour's drive from Fécamp and 40 minutes from Dieppe
  • Playground, library and ping pong on site
What an excellent spot for days on the sand and exploring up and down the Normandy coast: Camping Etennemare is half an hour's stroll from the beach in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, a seventh-century town in Upper Normandy's Seine-Maritime department. The town's many restaurants, bars and half-timbered buildings are all niftily within walking distance too. The friendly owners here haven't simply relied on the location, though – not at all. They've added extra opportunities for splashing about in the form of a swimming pool (open during high season only) with a waterslide and a roof for times when the weather's not so great. If you're not plunging into the water or hurtling down its chute at any point, you might prefer to bask with a book borrowed from the library while the kids hurtle around the playground…? Entertainment is organised on Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, and the site also has ping pong tables and a pétanque court for those who fancy challenging a family member to a friendly match or two. Bread and pastries can be ordered on site; perhaps you might fancy picking up your baguettes and croissants before taking the short stroll to the town beach or packing everybody into the car to drive half an hour to Fécamp for dramatic cliff views, another splendid beach and lots of watersports activities…

Local attractions

Camping Etennemare is in the small fishing town of Saint-Valery-en-Caux on the Alabaster Coast, between Dieppe (40 minutes' drive) and Fécamp (half an hour), all of which should suggest lots of opportunities for outdoor play. Saint-Valery-en-Caux dates back to the seventh century and has a beach that's sandy at low tide, edged by cliffs that overlook the Channel. Another pebbly beach as well as a 15th-century castle are in Dieppe, the port town at which you must sample scallops. The famed smoked herring dishes of these parts hail from Fécamp, another fishing port where catches have been landed for over a thousand years. Normandy's capital Rouen (55 minutes) is known for many a thing, such as the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen with its scenic Butter Tower, the city's castle, many museums including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen with works by Monet, and the Jardin des Plantes de Rouen botanical gardens. For outdoorsy pursuits nearby, hire a kayak at the nearby watersports centre (10 minutes), play golf or tennis or have a spot of fishing or horse riding.
