It's free, quick and easy!
- Quiet family park 3.5 kilometres from Alabaster Coast beaches
- A 15-minute drive from Étretat and 25 from Le Havre
- Snack bar, breakfasts, pétanque, free wifi and electric bike rental
It's holidays 'à la normande' at Camping Le Grand Hameau, a peaceful family site close to the cliffs and beaches of Upper Normandy's Alabaster Coast. These well-kept grounds – which include a pétanque court, a proper play area and plenty of room for other outdoor japes – are yours to wander through and chill out in, with fresh sea air close at hand in Saint-Jouin-Bruneval (five minutes’ drive).
For a leisurely start to days touring the varied Normandy coast, order your bread, croissants and other tasty treats the night before and voilà – you'll have a fab French breakfast to wake up to. Camping Le Grand Hameau also opens up its snack bar in the afternoons and evenings (except on Monday, when it closes early) to give sustenance to folk drifting back from the beach.
Camping Le Grand Hameau is a nicely nifty spot for outings by bike too – it's located just off a cycle path with fine seaside vistas and also rents out electric two-wheelers (handy with the latter's uphill sections). Heading inland and zipping along the edge of traditional clos-masure farms is another way to get the wind rushing through your hair.
You can also pedal (or walk, or drive) down into Saint-Jouin-Bruneval village centre, where you can settle down for a coffee or lunch at one of the village's seafront eateries and watch big ships making their way towards a close-by port.

Local attractions
Le Havre (25 minutes' drive) may not be one of northern France's picture-postcard ports, but it's certainly worth a visit – this gritty industrial town was all but destroyed in the Second World War, but by the 1960s it had emerged as a hub of modern architecture (so much so that UNESCO awarded it Word Heritage status). It's also got museums by the bucketful – the MuMa museum (Musée d'Art Moderne André Malraux) is particularly worthy of note for housing some of the best French Impressionist paintings anywhere outside of Paris.
Honfleur (45 minutes) is pretty much the opposite of Le Havre – with its narrow slate-covered houses and pic-worthy old port, it's easy to forget that this place was also once a hub of trade. Drop by Naturospace Honfleur (50 minutes), just outside the town centre, if Normandy's less-than-tropical climate has you hankering for the sight of exotic butterflies.
Should you set out from base in the other direction, you'll reach Étretat after a mere 15 minutes on the road, home to remarkable natural arches and spectacular white cliffs.
