It's free, quick and easy!
- Small, secluded site with a single lodge on the edge of a wood
- 10 minutes' drive to Vesoul town centre; 45 minutes to Besançon
- Outdoor pool, gardens, gym, hot tub and trampoline on site
Browsing for breaks with a bit of extra seclusion? Then meet Lodge des Grands Chênes, a small-scale, family-run site in France's Franche-Comté proving that sometimes less really is more.
There's only one accommodation unit here, so stays at Lodge des Grands Chênes come with a nicely intimate feel and plenty of space. The canvas lodge, set up in a splendidly peaceful family garden, also has the advantage of sole access to an outdoor pool, gym, free wifi and a hot tub that’s kept at an inviting 36°C.
Inside, there's a kitchen area with a microwave, fridge, coffee machine and lots of other gizmos, with equally smart sleeping quarters and toilet and shower facilities. There's also a spacious outdoor decking area for kicking back and taking in the views.
Said views include trees, and lots of them – the site's name means 'big oaks' in the local lingo, and appropriately enough the tent is set on the edge of a woodland. There's also a treehouse where half-pint foresters can get up to all sorts of games, along with a trampoline and swings for tiddlers less keen on heights.
Lodge des Grands Chênes is on the outskirts of the small village Andelarrot and a mere 10-minute motor from Vesoul, where you can shop for bargains at the market on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

Local attractions
New to these parts? Venture into Vesoul (10 minutes' drive) and call in at the tourist office for tips on seasonal activities and festivals. Staple sights in town include its old centre, lake and vélorail, a self-pedalled adventure that takes guests on jolly jaunts through the neighbouring countryside. In the summer months, Ludolac water park (10 minutes) is also likely to make a splash with the kids.
On top of that, you can make a break for more urban explores in Besançon (45 minutes), a city well worth travelling to for its enormous citadel and views of the river Doubs alone. There's also a free museum here with a kooky mix of clocks, watches and classical paintings, but the city's best-known timepiece, the astronomical clock, is housed in the cathedral.
Day trips slightly further afield include Belfort (an hour), home to a famous lion statue by Bartholdi (y'know, the guy who did New York’s Statue of Liberty). Close to the German and Swiss borders, meanwhile, is Mulhouse (an hour and 20 minutes), where top attractions like the Cité de l’Automobile and Cité du Train museums are likely to get transport fans going.
