  • Shaded site on the banks of the Aube
  • Spectacular and peaceful setting around a 19th-century dovecot
  • Direct river access, canoe hire, playground and indoor lounge
A riverside site on a 19th-century French estate… sound boastful enough yet? Get ready to get smug with a stay at Domaine Le Colombier on the banks of the Aube, in the fizzingly fab region of Champagne-Ardenne. As you'll see from the pics, this is a lushly viewsome place, green and flower-filled with loads of room for stretching out and serious idling. And as you might gather from the name, there's a dovecot on site too: settle down beside it for a picnic to see how many pigeons you can spy flitting in and out of the colombier holes… Domaine Le Colombier is a mere minute's meander from the Aube department village of Dienville, in a Champagne-Ardenne setting between Paris and Strasbourg. It has direct access to the river for active days canoeing and swimming; hire a canoe from the team for serene hours drifting along the water. Facilities include a well-equipped playground with trampoline, along with an indoor lounge with TV, dartboard, table football and squishy sofas. Bakeries and restaurants are within easy strolling distance.

Liked: Wonderful camp site. Pool was lovely but chilly. lots of picturesque views and places to visit locally and nearby . Staff were all friendly, most spoke English. Campsite has a lovely river running through it. Church bells let you know the time, day and night. If your a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. Everything was extremely clean and well looked after. Would definitely stay again! Do not miss the Aven d orgnac cave, not too far from here, it is breath taking!

Disliked: Nothing to dry hands on in the toilets. Loo roll dispenser outside of cubical. You’d better judge how much you going to need before you go in! Also toilets have no seats, but that seems to be the norm in a lot of places around here. They are super clean though!

Liked: The campsite facilities are immaculate. They are cleaned numerous times throughout the day and the cleaner at 0600 is very lovely. I like the fact they play ‘spa’ like music. The male owner is very friendly and seems to be around a lot keeping everything tidy and clean through the day. Showers and toilets are communal ( separate cubicles) which isn’t something I’m used to but it was ok. The water is on a timed tap which is a nuisance but I understand why. The grounds are lovely and the composting / recycling facilities are good. We loved the free roaming chickens - especially our cocker spaniel Ruby who was mesmerised. Our first time to this area and we loved the village. Amazingly on the doorstep is a huge lake area with lots of activities and lots of designated areas for for kids to play games.

Disliked: None that are significant.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Pretty, surroundings & charming little town in Deinville. Lovely church. The site looked aesthetically pleasing with the dovecote & courtyard. Aube river is beautiful.

Disliked: Very small pitches, little room to place our table chairs or cook next to our van. Some pitches had hedges between for privacy but none surrounding our pitch did nothing separating each pitch - so very tightly packed together with zero privacy. Not ideal! Free roaming chickens which were walking all over pitches & whilst we didn't have much trouble were being a pain to our neighbours. Not much available on site although there was a play area for kids that looked good! No common/lounge room, bar or restauraunt. They did have a food truck outside the site but quite pricey an limited veggie options. Facilities were very clean & modern but having washing up facilities inside same units as showers & toilets for everyone (not letting you enter the building wearing shoes) was a pain! Lots of queing as people took shoes on & off and some wanted to wash up others shower etc. Overall steep price for what were tiny non private pitches.

From the manager: Bonjour et merci pour votre avis.

Liked: The campsite was beautifully organised. The bathroom system was the cleanest and best I have come across and I have never had to complain, so this was beyond 5 star! It gave me ideas of how to keep my bathroom cleaner at home! The site was friendly and the activities were endless. We how to return.

Liked: Great facilities and really clean. Lots for the children to do and a nice short walk to the lake.

Disliked: We only stayed a couple of nights but didn't realise on booking our campervan was not allowed to leave the site during the stay. If I had booked longer and not realised it would have been a bit frustrating. Maybe if I had read the details properly I would have known.

Love this camp site.

Liked: Beautiful, well kept and clean camp site next to the river in Dienville. Easy walking distance the bar and restaurant by the lakes. We were sorry we had only booked to stop here for one night. Not far from Troyes, with easy access to A5 and A26 this will now be our “go to” site whenever we are travelling to or from Eurotunnel.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike here.

Local attractions

The lush waters of the Aube are right to hand from the site for swimming, paddling and canoeing, but if you seek yet more watery times it's an easy 10-minute drive to the Aube reservoir and its two lakes, Amance and Temple. Make for Lac d'Amance for watersports including jetskiing and motorboating (this is the biggest watersports lake this close to Paris), and to Temple for birdwatching, fishing and a more peaceful vibe; motorboats aren't allowed on this part of the reservoir. The lakes are part of the woodland and water landscapes of the Orient Forest Regional Natural Park (Lac d'Orient, 25 minutes' drive from Domaine Le Colombier, is the park's third lake). A 42-kilometre bike path weaves through the trees around all three lakes for scenic rides, followed by a lengthy laze on one of the three sandy beaches of Lac d'Orient, the park's biggest. By car, Aube department capital and ancient town Troyes is 40 minutes' drive away, straight through the forest. Or give the kids a splendid day out by driving south for 15 minutes instead, to arrive at the Nigloland amusement park, one of the most visited in France.
