  • Family-friendly site surrounded by lakes, hills and forests
  • On the edge of the small town of Matour; Mâcon 35 minutes' drive
  • Next to a public outdoor pool with a jacuzzi (open July and August)
Base yourself at this brilliant Burgundy campsite if you're looking to have access to lots of natural landscapes. This part of the French countryside is known for its lovely mix of lakes and hills, with all sorts of outdoor activities, tasty dishes and (this being Burgundy) wines to try as you hop from valley to valley. Camping de Matour also has a wide range of draws all of its own, from the mountain bike rental available here in high season to its sports pitches, tennis courts and indoor chillout zone with books and games. There's also some summer entertainment and a sprinkling of themed evenings during the warmest months of July and August. Just next door, a public swimming pool is available in July and August only. Three separate pools are on offer here, plus other aquatic attractions like a waterslide, jacuzzi and sauna (for a soothing spell in the latter, book in advance). Day tickets can also be bought at reception if you'd like to try a spot of angling on site; many more relaxing fishing spots are available close by in the local area. Matour's handy high street is a few minutes' walk away for when you need croissants, a coffee in the square, a meal out or a supermarket shop.

Liked: Lovely site, great snack bar, decent if busy municipul pool right next door. Nice friendly staff. Clean toilets (with seats and loo roll) and clean spacious showers. Had a lovely 3 night stay and didn't want to leave. Little town in easy reach (5min walk) and enjoyed having a look around the area.

Disliked: Uneaven pitch, but we made it work :)

Liked: Shady plots, nicely laid out so it never felt full or busy (even though it was full!) Well kept site with clean showers/ toilets etc. Great local facilities for all the family - small selection of village shops 500m away, great play park and recreational walks. Local market on Mon.

Local attractions

Starting locally, stick around Matour for pony and horseback riding or for adventure walks for kids and geocaching (all within a kilometre of base). You could also head to Les ânes de Francis (10 minutes' drive) for donkey trekking through the countryside with an expert local guide, or to the calm surrounds of the Pézanin arboretum (10 minutes) to see top trees from near and far. To taste the local terroir, try the regular markets at Matour or La Clayette (20 minutes), where there's also a gorgeous lakeside château (not open to the public, but still great to admire on walks and picnics). For a stately home you can visit, book a guided tour at the ornate Château de Drée (25 minutes). You could also head to the nearby Mâconnais wine area (around 20 minutes' drive away on the western bank of the Saône river) to sample local wines, or head into Mâcon itself (35 minutes) to inspect the Saint-Pierre church and Saint Laurent bridge. The big city of Lyon (an hour and 15 minutes) is within easy reach too if you fancy a trip to France's foodie capital.
