  • Family campsite on the banks of the River Drée at Épinac in Burgundy
  • Morvan Natural Park 15 minutes’ drive; Beaune vineyards 25 minutes
  • Snack bar and shared barbecues; sports courts; fishing and bike hire
Found deep in Southern Burgundy countryside, Camping du Pont Vert sits on the banks of the River Drée at Épinac, close to the vineyards of the Beaune and 15 minutes by car from adventures in Morvan Regional Natural Park. However, there’s a surfeit of things to do if you’d rather stay put on site. Anglers can go fishing on the Drée, and fun family facilities include a playground for younger guests and a multi-sports field laid out for volleyball and badminton, plus ping-pong tables and a pétanque court. And if you all want to stay active during your Burgundy jaunt, you can hire bikes on site to pedal sections of the Greenway that runs between Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon. There’s really no reason to stray too far from your pitch when you can buy staples from the small grocery store and spark up the communal barbecue. Otherwise, if alfresco cooking is not your bag, make a beeline for drinks and snacks at the terrace bar. And the practical stuff? The touring pitches are neatly landscaped, divided by hedges for extra privacy and partially shaded to save you from the midsummer sun. Amenities-wise, the showers have plenty of hot water, there’s a washing-up area and a washing machine and dryer to take care of chores.

Local attractions

The historic towns and villages of Burgundy are yours for the taking. Be dazzled by the brightly tiled roofs and Romanesque architecture of Beaune (35 minutes’ drive) or visit the exquisite Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy in Dijon (an hour). You can also discover a soaring medieval cathedral in Autun (20 minutes), admire the half-timbered cottages in gorgeous Nolay (15 minutes) or tour the towers and ramparts of the imposing castle at Châteauneuf-en-Auxois (25 minutes). Of course, this region is known for its wines as much as its history; vineyards throughout the region are open for tastings and sales, with several prestigious Beaune wineries found around Santenay (25 minutes). If you need some artisan snacks to accompany your newly bought wines, several gourmet markets are held locally, including Beaune (Saturday) and a short stroll from the site in Épinac (Sunday). The kids might be due a treat by this time; cheer them up with a day on the rollercoasters at Parc des Combes (half an hour), or use up any surplus energy pedalling the Vélorail du Morvan (20 minutes) through Burgundy valleys and woodland.
