- Small British-run rural site in the Morvan Regional Natural Park
- Half an hour from medieval and Roman attractions in Autun
- Bar with terrace, communal firepits, pizza oven and fish smoker
Good things, so the saying goes, come in small packages. And indeed this proves to be true at Le Petit Papillon, five minutes’ drive from the (also petite) village of Cussy-en-Morvan.
British owners Susan and Adrian realised their dream of opening a holiday business in France in 2016, and now spend their days sharing the site’s peaceful vibe and spectacular views with guests from all over the world. On a small site like this you can rely on a friendly welcome and plenty of personal advice on what to see and do.
Cool off on steamy summer days in the small swimming pool set up in the garden; after your dip, lay your towel out on the surrounding lawn to dry off while kids splash in the pool or play on the swing. A game of pétanque is practically mandatory for a French holiday, and you can also try your hand at skittles and various other games in the bar.
In the evenings, the party often moves from the bar over to the communal firepit, which handily doubles as a barbecue for alfresco eats. If you’ve had a successful day with the fishing rod, you can deposit your haul in the site’s fish smoker for tasty pickings.
When it comes to going out and about, Susan and Adrian can offer plenty of insider tips to help you get the most out of the area. It’s a half-hour drive to the nearest supermarket but there are little shops and restaurants a few minutes’ drive away where you can shop and eat as the locals do.

Local attractions
The site has easy access to walking and cycle trails taking you through wooded hills to rivers, waterfalls and traditional villages.
A popular local destination is Lac des Settons, a half-hour drive away, where you can relax on the beach, swim in the lake or find a quiet corner to fish for pike and perch. Active types can hire sailing boats, paddleboards and rowing boats to explore the lake; pack a picnic and head off to a small island for a castaway-style lunch.
You can also hire canoes in Dracy-Saint-Loup, 20 minutes away, and paddle your way down the Arroux river at your own pace. If you’d like to tackle something a bit more heartbeat-raising, a rafting centre is around 50 minutes’ drive away in the north of the park.
Heading out of the natural park, you can visit Château de Sully, half an hour away, for a guided tour of the moated castle, a stroll around the kitchen gardens and a sample of the wines from the surrounding vineyards.
