  • Glamping site on a working organic farm five minutes' drive from Cluny
  • Half an hour's drive from Touroparc zoo
  • Homemade breakfasts and sociable farm dinners on site
Ah, the good life… spending your days in peaceful surrounds, feasting on farm produce and hanging out with farmyard pals. Folks who’ve ever fancied living like this can have a taster at Ferme de la Corbette, a glamping site on a farm five minutes’ drive from Cluny. They won’t expect you to get hands-on here, but there’s plenty to get you fully immersed in farm life – a homemade brekkie is thrown in, and you can gather à table again in the evenings if you wish. On both occasions you’ll be feeding on food either from the farm or other local producers, and the owners will be on hand to tell you a little about their herds and methods should you be feeling inspired to start managing your own little farmstead. Should the nippers be not too enthused about hearing where that tasty dinner really came from, they can be dispatched to the playground to swing, slide or scramble up the climbing wall while the grownups chat over a glass of vino (local stuff, of course). Loaf about in the company of the cows and sheep at this rural idyll all day if you wish, or use it as a base for wider Bourgogne exploration: settlements both medieval and prehistoric are close by, and there’s an adventure park and a zoo within a half-hour drive to entertain les enfants.

Local attractions

Cluny’s a very handsome place, and well worth a wander. The Benedictine Abbey has been famed across Europe since the Middle Ages, and the whole town’s been well preserved for an atmospheric stroll (although the small sorts may be more interested in hearing that it’s also well endowed with cafés and ice cream shops). Blanot, 15 minutes’ drive away, is another pretty place for a stroll, or you could rack up the history lessons with visits to the medieval Château de Berzé-le-Châtel (10 minutes), the lavish gold-flecked rooms of 17th-century Château de Cormatin (15 minutes) and the prehistoric Caves of Azé (20 minutes). Kids rolling their eyes at such endeavours? Perhaps their good behaviour could be rewarded with a trip to see the exotic beasts at the excellent Touroparc zoo (half an hour away), or an exciting clamber through the treetops at Acrobath adventure park (15 minutes). If, meanwhile, it’s more fresh air you fancy, take your bikes or boots out onto one of the traffic-free voie verte routes that run from Cluny. Head north towards Givry or south towards Macon; either way is mighty scenic, with plenty of picnic spots en route and the odd vineyard for a restorative tipple.
