  • Peaceful site on the bank of the Aron, close to the Nivernais canal
  • Two minutes' walk from Châtillon-en-Bazois; 45 mins' drive from Nevers
  • Breakfast and bike hire; boating and horse riding from the village
Fancy boating in Burgundy? Les Roulottes de Bazois is right on the banks of the Aron, and a short hop, skip and splash from the Nivernais canal which links two mighty rivers of France, the Loire and the Seine. It’s a top location for boat cruises and bankside bike rides: you can hire boats in the village of Châtillon-en-Bazois a couple of minutes’ walk away and hire bikes right on site. You might be roaming all over the place, but your spacious and comfy gypsy caravan will be staying right where it is, surrounded by a private garden area with outdoor seating. Inside there's a simple kitchenette with a hob and a fridge, a bathroom with a shower and toilet and radiator to keep you glowing on chilly nights. Feel like fishing? There’s a private and peaceful pontoon for you right on the riverbank. Bursting with energy? Burn it off on the tennis court, or challenge the family to a pitched battle on the pétanque court. If indoor pursuits are more your style, head over to the reception room for billiards, table football and board games. If, on the other hand, you’re so laidback here that even ambling into the village for your morning croissants is a strain, then book yourself in for breakfast on site. A pair of sizeable barbecue areas takes care of your other feasting needs, along with a communal kitchen so well equipped you could knock up a Burgundian banquet...

Local attractions

Straddling the Loire in stately fashion, Nevers (45 minutes) makes a nifty choice for families with differing interests. The château, the shrine of St. Bernadette and the museum of fine art and porcelain should satisfy all sorts for history and culture, while the skate and BMX park in town, and the treetops adventure zone just outside it will give the kids something to shout about. An hour away, Parc Le PAL aims to please everyone too with a selection of heart-in-mouth, stomach-in-boots thrill rides, as well as a menagerie of beasts rare, cute and dangerous in the zoo next door. For walks with a dash of ancient history, head over to the ancient site of Bibracte (45 minutes), once capital of the Gauls: learn about Celtic civilisation and its last stand against Rome, try your hand at excavating and hike up Mont Beuvray for cracking views across the Morvan Regional Natural Park. There’s an equestrian centre in Châtillon-en-Bazois if you want to savour the local surrounds from the saddle, and if you’re more of a speed freak, the racetrack at Magny-Cours (45 minutes) beckons with a packed programme of rallies and shows and a go-kart track for those who want a go themselves.
