Great cycling routes nearby

  • Quiet site 20 minutes' walk from the little town of Santenay
  • Well placed for walking or cycling to the Burgundy vineyards
  • Access to payable municipal pool 150 metre from the site (July/August)
What splendid times await the casual cyclist and the avid wine-sipper around the Burgundy area – no lycra-clad days puffing up and down slopes around here, just meandering gently down quiet country lanes as you flit between vineyards to sample and purchase wines, or generally take in the gorgeous greenery that comes with the territory. If your little ears have perked up at the very idea, you’d do well to consider a stay at Camping de Santenay, just outside the little town of Santenay and handily placed for pedalling off to the many, many wineries that pepper the area. Less confident (or energetic) cyclists can pick from one of the 15 or so wineries that are within 10 minutes’ bike ride, while those looking to work up a thirst can head up to Beaune with a ride of an hour or so for a well-earned tipple or two. And if you’re accompanied by kids too young to appreciate such wine-based wanderings? Fret not, for more attractions are on hand – châteaux galore, plus canoeing, amusement parks and simply sauntering around the scenic lanes (who knows, you may just happen upon a winery as you go – and it would be rude not to pop in, of course). When your legs declare it to be time for a rest, retreat to your peaceful pitch to snooze in a sunny patch or shaded spot while the nippers nip off for games of badminton, volleyball or table tennis, or a bit of playground clambering. After your restorative doze maybe you’ll have summoned enough energy to bring the old arms into action by gathering la famille for a round of miniature golf or pétanque (top tip: balance out your bowling arm by clasping a glass of red in the other). Great wine deserves great food, of course, and it’s really rather easy to eat very well indeed around these parts. It’s a 20-minute trot into town for restaurants serving up local faves such as coq au vin, escargots and steaming plates of boeuf bourguignon, or to scour the shops for bits and pieces to inspire your own creations (keep an eye out for local cheeses, sausages, wild mushrooms and venison depending on the season). There’s no need to go far for your simple snackage though – plenty of everyday essentials, including fresh bread and pastries to fuel your day’s activity, can acquired at the site’s grocery store.

Liked: Staff were friendly, close to the small town. Decent sized, flat pitches. Also the swimming pool was free to park residents. Clean, but tired toilet block.

Disliked: No signs to tell you where the grey waste and chemical toilets where. Also not all plots had numbers and as you chose your own plot ( which was a good thing) I didn't know what to tell reception. No wifi.

Liked: Close to a lovely town, easy to walk to. Pizza trailer on site in the evenings.

Disliked: Very unkempt pitches resulted in a huge number of mosquitoes and flies leading all members of our family to be bitten severely. Showers weren’t the best, very tired and unclean on the various times we used them.

Local attractions

One could happily spend days (weeks, even, if one were truly dedicated) pottering around the various wine establishments nearby – if your radius stretches to an hour’s bike ride you may well find your mind boggled with choice before you’ve even touched a drop. If you like to have a little order to your plans, perhaps set out on one of the prescribed routes in the area, such as the Route des Grands Crus (which takes in several of the area’s finest cellars) or the Eurovelo 6 long-distance trail, which skirts the Canal du Centre as it passes through Santenay. Warm days may require the cooling presence of a bit of water – in July and August, dive in to the municipal pool that’s 150 metres from the site (an extra fee is required), or stick to the surface with kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing and the like from the watersports centre up in Autun (40 minutes away). Landlubbing leisure-seekers may instead prefer a round of golf at the course just under a half-hour drive away or a spot of fishing at Etang de Torcy, 40 minutes away. Even if you’re not taking in the wine producers it’d be wrong to leave the area without visiting at least one of the area's châteaux – gawp at the pretty patterns on the tiled roof of Château de Santenay, make the 15-minute drive to the turreted Château de la Rochepot, or take the tour at Château des Couches (also 15 minutes away) to poke around in the underground tunnels and dungeons. Any kids in danger of going cross-eyed at all this history can be safely restored to (relative) sanity with the various rides and a trip on the little tourist train at Parc des Combes or by flinging themselves through the treetops on the forest adventure trails at Acrogivry, both of which are around half an hour’s drive from the site.
