  • Treetop cabins and yurts in an Auvergne forest
  • Half an hour's drive from Prabouré mountain activity centre
  • Electric bike hire and trails from site; pool and sauna
They don’t dress things up in the Auvergne... and no need to anyway in this eye-catching central French province of volcanoes, rivers and forest gorges. So when you pick a spot called Cabanes et Yourtes de la Vallée de l’Ance, you know what you’re going to get: comfy treetop cabins and yurts in a wooded river valley. This is a site that strives to be in harmony with the natural surroundings, so there’s no electricity or running water in your treetop hideouts. They’re elevated for maximum views and solitude and accessed by walkways: the owners suggest you don’t turn up in your six-inch heels hauling a heavy suitcase... Modern comforts like lighting and plumbing are a short walk away down at the main house, where there are communal toilets and showers. There’s also a dining area for breakfasts and evening meals booked in advance, a cosy library on the mezzanine to curl up in and games to keep the kids out of mischief. Outside there’s a little playground with a swing and a slide, table football and a swimming pool open in the summer months. You can also hire electric bikes to explore a pair of forest trails nearby (or walk them if you’re really old-fashioned); after a day’s exertions, head back and steam your tired limbs back to life in the sauna.

Local attractions

The wildlife-filled forest around you is the eastern edge of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, which is full of stuff to clamber up, float on and zoom down. For a first taste, head 20 minutes’ drive to the Montpeloux volcano; it’s not smoking anymore but its basalt columns are so like a vast church organ that you fear they might start blowing Bach and brimstone any minute. The surrounding area is thick with trails for hiking and biking, and it’s around an hour’s walk from the volcano to the thundering Creux de l’Oulette waterfall. If quieter waters for swimming, fishing and kayaking are more your thing, you can do the lot on the lake just outside Saint-Anthème (25 minutes); the fish also bite (so they say) on the tributaries of the Ance river near Sauvessanges, five minutes away. After high-up action? Head half an hour to Prabouré: in the summer this ski resort becomes a mountain adventure magnet where you can zipwire your way through valleys; go-kart and scoot your way downhill at great speed or saddle up for more sedate mountain travels on a pony. The views from the various trails and bike paths are brilliant, possibly only rivalled by the massive canyon at Bouzols, an hour away.
