If you’re heading over to the Auvergne in search of a fabulous spot for a family holiday, it’s well worth having a look at Camping Le Pré – this friendly site has an excellent village location and heaps of facilities on both the leisure and practical sides. This is a lovely location, on the edge of the village of Montaigut-le-Blanc and with a grocery shop, a cheese shop and a restaurant a few minutes’ walk away. The village’s public pool (open in the summer months) is just a couple of minutes’ walk away too, with free entry for campsite guests – it’s got lifeguard cover and a paddling pool so it’s a great place to hang out with the family for a while. There are several ways to fill your time on site, too – including games of tennis, volleyball, table tennis and pétanque. A games room, playground and trampoline provide extra entertainment for the kids as well. Keeping everyone fed should be straightforward, too – the site has a food truck catering area serving up snacks, fries, ice cream and cold drinks, and there’s a bread delivery service that supplies breakfast orders every day in July and August. For other foodie bits, see if you can sort a visit to the village’s organic/local market on a Wednesday. Other practical facilities on site include a launderette (with coin-operated washing machine and dryer), a motorhome service point and an unlimited wifi connection. The site also has two toilet blocks with toilets, showers, disabled facilities and a baby bathroom.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Beautiful peaceful campsite. We arrived early evening and it was raining so didn’t see much. Still early season so hardly anyone there.

Disliked: Showers were hot but dated and toilets were the same. Grass was very long. Everything was overgrown

Local attractions

The obvious place to start your explorations of the local area is right there in Montaigut-le-Blanc, where you can visit the château (open in summer) and local church or go fishing on the Couze Chambon river. Château de Murol (20 minutes' drive) and Château de la Batisse (half an hour) are close by for more architecture spotting. To see some more of the local scenery, perhaps you’d like to take a waterfall walk in the Chaudefour Valley nature reserve (25 minutes) or head to the top of Puy de Sancy (55 minutes), the highest peak in the Auvergne. Lac Chambon (20 minutes’ drive) and Lac d’Aydat (25 minutes) are both good places for waterside walks, canoeing and swimming. This is volcanic territory, so you may well also want to explore the Puy de Dôme (40 minutes), heading to the top on foot or by the panoramic train, or learn more about what’s going on under your feet at Vulcania (45 minutes). Closer to home, the caves and petrified fountains at Saint-Nectaire (15 minutes) are well worth a stop, too.
