  • Scenic family site with fishing lake, 10 minutes' drive from Giat
  • A 45-minute drive from the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park
  • Boat hire; summer kids' fishing camps; bar-restaurant and sauna
Angling addicts and volcano voyagers… proceed to Domaine du Balbuzard for days on the lake and geological jaunts aplenty. This family-friendly site in France’s Auvergne region is 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Giat, 45 minutes from several volcanoes and right next to a lake full of carp and pike, tench and roach; boats and tubes can be hired from the shore for fishing purposes or purely for frolicking on the waters. The action’s not just for old hands: any aspiring anglers aged between eight and 18 can sign up for fishing camps in the summer months, learning the secrets of a cracking catch from a pro while perfecting their survival skills in the surrounding woods. If you’d rather gaze at the lake with a glass in hand, the on-site bar is there to oblige and the restaurant dishes up snacks, regional specialities and home-baked bread. In the intervals between eating, drinking, fishing and boating, the games room has table tennis and table football for competitive types; if you're craving quiet, take a turn round the organic gardens and meet the resident Highland cattle, or steam away in solitude in the sauna cabin. Pablo, proprietor and piscatorial expert, will gladly fill you in on further fishing possibilities; he may point you towards Pontaumur, 10 minutes’ drive away, where trout catching on the Sioulet river combines with hikes through the grand gorges.

Local attractions

Happily, the hills are not alive… The last eruption in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park happened 6,000 years ago, but in human holiday terms, the action’s still going. Take a 40-minute drive to Vulcania for seismic-themed thrill rides and cinematic experiences, then go next door to Puy de Lemptégy for walks and train rides inside the mountain, where an eruption simulator and light show greet the stout of heart. A similar distance away, the spa and ski resorts of Mont-Dore and La Bourboule do a nice line in thermal spring baths, funicular and cable car rides and high-up hikes, while in the little town of Volvic, cave tours and exhibitions give a different take on the local bottled water trade. If you're after edibles, make the 10-minute trip to Giat, where local farmers sell their wares at twice-monthly Sunday markets, or sidle over to Saint-Nectaire’s cheese centre an hour away for dairy tours and tastings. Burn it off afterwards at Aqua Loisirs Confolant, where the Sioulet widens into a lake for such leisurely larks as kayaking, pedalo rides and inflatable obstacle courses. Those more into interiors must have a meander round Aubusson, centre of a rich tapestry heritage, with museums and many a tempting rug shop; both are half an hour away.
