  • Spacious site near Buxières-sous-Montaigut, run by a Dutch family
  • Around an hour's drive from Puy-de-Dôme volcano and Le PAL theme park
  • Farm animals, veg garden, swimming pool and table d'hôte meals
Can you imagine yourself drifting gently through sunny French gardens, casually plucking herbs as you wander to garnish your evening meal? Or perhaps you’re more in the mood to gather with fellow guests at the big garden table while your jovial Dutch hosts Daan and Jacqueline serve up a sociable table d'hôte meal? Either is a most tasty option for guests at Sans Parure, spread around the grounds of a 19th-century farmhouse a couple of minutes’ drive from the petite Puy-de-Dôme village of Buxières-sous-Montaigut. Not full yet? Add to the list of tempting Auvergne eats campfire evenings on site and days of touring nearby markets to find fine local cheeses and wines. Pop a pin in a map to show the centre of France and you’ll not be far off here, with handy access to the A71 (20 minutes away) making it a splendid spot for cross-country travellers seeking a stopover. Or just settle in for the duration of your hols – there’s plenty of low-key activity to fill your days, including rural walks, fishing, canoeing, paragliding, volcano viewing and pottering about in pretty little towns. Sensible sorts will also want to schedule in a bit of time just to chill out on site, taking swims in the outdoor pool, helping the kids feed the friendly farm animals or simply seeking out a shady spot for quality time in the company of a good book (and, just possibly, a glass of that local wine).

Local attractions

Being in an area named after a volcano, it’s a fine idea to visit Puy-de-Dôme itself, just over an hour’s drive away. It might not be the highest peak in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, but it’s one of the most scenic. Depending on your appetite for activity and adventure you can view it on a hike, a scenic train ride or by paragliding over its upper reaches. There’ll be no sudden surprise eruptions here, as the volcano’s been dormant for many a year. So if you want to see what you’re missing, take a visit to Vulcania (an hour from Sans Parure) to get all shook up on the earthquake simulator. Calm your nerves after that teeth-chattering experience with a day of gentle walks, fishing and canoeing in the Gorges de la Sioule (20 minutes’ drive), strolling to the waterfall in Saint-Priest-des-Champs (half an hour) or sipping wine in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule (40 minutes). The excellent Le PAL (a zoo and an amusement park all rolled into one) is about an hour’s drive away.
