  • Dog-friendly site on the banks of the River Allier
  • A 15-minute drive from Lavoûte-Chilhac and Brioude
  • Restaurant and bar on site serving cocktails, ice cream and food
Camping on the banks of the River Allier is a pretty enticing idea in itself – but wouldn’t it just be that little bit better if you could acquire ice creams and cocktails to provide that extra boost to your riverside relaxation? Both of these are among the offerings at Camping La Vialette – the site has a restaurant and bar for cool drinks and sweet treats, along with breakfasts, lunches and dinner options (salads, burgers, steaks and the like…). It’s also the place to be on Friday evenings in July and August, when guests gather for sociable theme meals as the sun goes down. With all those food options on site it’s handy there are also numerous ways to build up an appetite – the site has a play area, tennis court and pétanque court, and guests can take to the river to swim, launch their canoes/kayaks or settle down for some fishing. Whitewater rafting and horse riding are close by too, and cyclists can set out to pedal along the riverside Via Allier. This lovely little Auvergne location is a couple of kilometres away from Villeneuve-d’Allier and has a few spectacular spots within about 20 minutes’ drive, including the riverside villages of Lavoûte-Chilhac and Lavaudieu or the medieval town of Brioude, which has a Roman-style basilica. Amenities on site have been well thought out, including a washing-up area, recycling area and bathrooms with disabled facilities. Dogs are welcome throughout the year.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Setting and beautiful area.

Disliked: Very basic indeed. No toilet seats, no toilet paper. Only just acceptable cleanliness. No vegetarian or even any choice on the menu in the restaurant (they did say this was exceptional).

Liked: Lovely peaceful campsite. Only met one member of staff who could not speak English and my French is awful. We managed to communicate and he was very helpful. The owner was brilliant too and showed us what to do. Would definitely recommend this place. Gorgeous river and setting. Will come back here.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Local attractions

Getting out to see some of your surroundings should be easy – you’ll have the option of cycling along the riverside Via Allier bike path or taking a hike on the GR 470 Sources et Gorges de l’Allier (15 minutes’ drive), a trail that runs between Brioude and La Bastide-Puylaurent. Alternatively, you may like to take it easy by hiring a motorbike or classic 2CV to do your touring with a bit of engine power. Some of the local highlights include the characterful villages of Lavaudieu (20 minutes), a gorgeous place with arched bridge and 11th-century abbey, and Allègre (40 minutes), where the ruined castle sits high above the streets. Brioude (15 minutes) is a bit bigger, with a lace-making museum and river museum as well as St Julien’s Basilica, the largest Romanesque church in the Auvergne. Out in the countryside, you may like to look out for the Tunnel de Verneuges (25 minutes), Château de Lespinasse (25 minutes) and the natural rock formation Les Orgues de Prades (45 minutes).
