It's free, quick and easy!
- Secluded accommodation on the border between Cantal and Aveyron
- A 10-minute drive to Lapeyrugue; 15 to Aubrac Regional Natural Park
- Outdoor pool with unobstructed rural views; massages and farm animals
The edge of the Massif Central (the Cantal-Aveyron border, to be precise) is a particularly sweet spot for nature-filled hols. This part of the world is home to landscapes of lush tree-lined hills and valleys that stretch out for miles on end (the Aubrac Regional Natural Park, a mere 15-minute drive away, isn't far either). In the middle of all this is Domaine Estiva, an elegant site with plush accommodation located in the privacy of a shaded chestnut grove.
Lazy poolside breaks your thing? Sophisticated on-site swims (or equally sophisticated snoozes on the natural wooden decking) are sorted here thanks to an infinity pool with uninterrupted rural views. There's also a spa area for guests' exclusive use (massages can be arranged here, too).
Swish facilities aside, this site isn't the kind of place to shy away from life's simpler pleasures. Ania and Betrand, the friendly creators of Domaine Estiva, suggest bringing the kids down to the farmhouse to meet their sheep, goats, rabbits and chickens. Guests can also take a stroll around the grounds where, when the leaves start to turn, they're free to forage for mushrooms and chestnuts among the trees. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here too.
As well as having access to well-appointed kitchens, guests can also set up a barbecue. The nearest restaurants are about 10 minutes' drive away in Lapeyrugue.

Local attractions
To the west lies Cantal with its far-famed cheeses and spectacular vistas over ancient volcanoes. To the east, Aveyron's rolling hills are home to stunning lakes and pretty towns and villages. Both regions can be sampled on foot: the St James's Way, which runs along a stretch of the well-signposted GR 65 route, is one kilometre away from base. For another highly recommended ramble, make tracks for the far-reaching views at the Puy de l'Arbre near Montsalvy (15 minutes' drive).
Sporty types have plenty of options here, too. Sallies in the saddle can be arranged at a nearby riding school (15 minutes), while self-powered paddles around the Aubrac Regional Natural Park are available in Entraygues (20 minutes). If you can stomach the height, don't miss the spectacular high ropes course in Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence (50 minutes), also in the park.
Culture vultures roaming this neck of the woods might want to start with the Don ceramics works (20 minutes), an avant-garde studio and pottery hub that exhibits and sells unique pieces. Wine fans, meanwhile, should head down to Le Fel (20 minutes) for self-driven wine tours (just follow the brown signs).
