  • Friendly riverside park close to the Basque coast
  • A 10-minute drive from Saint-Jean-de-Luz; San Sebastián 35 minutes
  • Outdoor pool, kids' farm, Basque pelota court and bar-restaurant
Ongi etorri (that's 'welcome' in the local lingo) to the Basque Country and to Camping Suhiberry. This friendly site is in a splendidly green and peaceful spot – the entire place is covered with all kinds of foliage like oaks and poplars and has direct access to a local river. Making a bigger splash in the Atlantic is also on the cards, as Camping Suhiberry is a 10-minute drive from Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its sandy beaches. This family-oriented destination is a fab choice for those sojourning around here with kids: there's a petting zoo where they can get up close and personal with cute critters, a dedicated splash zone at the outdoor pool and plenty of high-season ents to keep them occupied. There's a lot to keep sporty types amused too, including tennis courts and traditional games of Basque pelota. Keen to try some local food? The on-site bar-restaurant is passionate about sharing Basque cuisine with newcomers; if you like your meals to come with a bit of bite, make sure to sample local Espelette peppers. Barbecues are also allowed here, making self-grilled grub an option, too. Supermarkets are on hand a 10-minute drive away in Saint-Jean-de-Luz; the town also has a covered market for foodies looking to get their hands on the freshest local produce.

Local attractions

There's so much to take in along this stretch of the Atlantic coast that sometimes it can be hard to get your bearings. Kick off your seaside jaunts with a quick stop at Urrugne viewpoint (five minutes' drive), then head east from base for Saint-Jean-de-Luz's beaches and Ciboure harbour (both 10 minutes) or west for the sea views on show at the Château d'Abbadie (10 minutes). Folk who are partial to a scenic train ride, meanwhile, should head inland to the small village of Col de Saint Ignace (20 minutes) and book a ticket for the Petit Train de la Rhune, a narrow-gauge railway that chugs its way up a nearby mountain (keep your eyes peeled for the shaggy semi-wild ponies that like to graze near the track). Cross-border day trips can also be easily sorted here. Fancy a tapas lunch? San Sebastián and its seafront bars are 35 minutes' drive away. Culture vultures who are happy to spend about an hour and 20 minutes on the road should make tracks for artsy Bilbao and its Guggenheim Museum (just seeing the spectacular building up close is well worth the trip).
