It's free, quick and easy!
- Four-hectare forest site two kilometres from a lake
- A 20-minute walk from Gastes; Mimizan-Plage 25 minutes’ drive
- Bike rental, seasonal snack bar, wifi and pétanque
It has a lot going for it, does Camping Les Échasses. First, that location – tucked away in a pine forest, this family-friendly site is 500 metres from the speedy D652 road (not that you'd know it from the ultra-low levels of traffic noise on site), so it's easy to access lots more lush Landes locales. There's also the fact that it's open all year round, which is rather handy if you're eying up off-season hols in this part of southwestern France.
If you want to spend more time out in the open air and less behind the wheel, then this place is for you: much is within easy walking distance of Camping Les Échasses, including Gastes' lake and mini market, while those who plan on roaming further afield can hire bikes at reception and head out for some backcountry pedalling.
Starting to get peckish? If you're here in summer, make sure to swing by the site's snack bar for cool drinks and scrummy small plates on the terrace. And no worries if you've missed the site-cooked grub – open-air dinners are still on the cards if you bring a barbecue along.
As for other amenities, there's also a playground, handy wifi access and a pétanque court where you can partake in some old-school boules.

Local attractions
Start out by ambling down to the shimmering shores of Lac de Biscarrosse et de Parentis (20 minutes' walk), a sizeable lake where there's a boat hire centre, pleasure port and well-kept beach with showers. Also on the lake is Biscarrosse (20 minutes' drive), a bustling small town close to a giant inflatable waterpark (30 minutes) and an intriguing seaplane museum (25 minutes).
For some folk, though, these freshwater haunts will be but a warm-up for the open sea. Nearby coastal options include the golden sands of Mimizan-Plage (25 minutes), a hub for surfers and bathers who come here to make the most of its 10 interrupted kilometres of beach. If heading to the Dune du Pilat (45 minutes), Europe's biggest sand dune, perhaps leave the bucket and spade at home – there's 60,000,000 m³ of the stuff here, making this a spot best admired from afar (or swooshed over while paragliding).
The larger resort town Arcachon (50 minutes) is a few kilometres north of the dune. Head here for classic 19th-century seaside architecture, a top aquarium (likely to prove popular with the kids) and some of France's best oysters (potentially somewhat less popular).
