Hire wheels on site and get prepared for seaside picnics at family-friendly Camping Les Peupliers. Your peaceful Peupliers place is half a kilometre from the Gironde department town of Vendays-Montalivet, with direct access to the stunning 12-kilometre beach of Montalivet-les-Bains via the quiet bike path leading directly from the site. (The eight-kilometre ride to the sea should take an average rider about half an hour; if you'd rather drive or are lugging beach kit/ toddlers, you can get there by car in 10 minutes.) Les Peupliers is a mighty pretty park, deep in the Médoc wine region and with over 30 kilometres of hiking and biking trails accessible within 500 metres. Its mission to be affordable to all means it has an excellent range of free facilities and services, including a pool, sun lounger use, miniature golf, table tennis, bowling, and a library with games. Forgetful sorts or those travelling light can also borrow power adapters and bodyboards at reception. A grocery shop is on site to bag supplies to fry up on the (free) barbecues; if you can't be faffed with that, a snack bar is open in high season. And if you're here in summer, a must is the huge daily market in Vendays-Montalivet, the biggest in the Gironde with over 200 stalls.

The knowledgeable team can steer you towards activities and attractions for all around this spectacular part of western France, whether your tastes tend towards beach days, watersports, hiking, wine tasting or city sightseeing (Bordeaux is an hour and a half's drive away). As well as the 30 kilometres of bike paths directly available from the site and the 40 kilometres of hiking trails in the surrounds, active types can access over 400 kilometres of bike paths around the Gironde department, as well as 2,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails. Those seeking inland watersports have the popular Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans about 55 minutes' drive away, for sailing, swimming, fishing and plenty more on one of France's biggest lakes. Ask on site or at the tourist office in Montalivet for details of local wine tastings and tours around the Médoc, Pauillac and Listrac châteaux; the tourist office is also the info point for the town's weekly events.
