It's free, quick and easy!
- By the shore of Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans and in a national forest
- Easy access to 160 kilometres of bike paths: hire bikes on site
- Pool, sports courts, shop and summer food truck
A lake? Surrounded by forest? And 10 minutes away from two spectacular Gironde beaches? If all these are firm ticks on your holiday checklist, Camping Huttopia Lac de Carcans is your site.
Bring your swimming togs, for the lake close to this family-friendly site is Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, one of the Great Lakes of the Landes and one of the biggest in France – watersports including kayaking and windsurfing are adjacent to the park. You'll need your best pedalling legs too, as the site is also in the spectacular surrounds of the Domaine de Bombannes national forest and its long lengths of cycle paths: around 160 kilometres to tackle for the energetic. Bikes can be hired on site.
A pool is among the site facilities if you prefer your dips a little less wild, and two volleyball courts, a pétanque court, a playground and two tennis courts are also around for land-based competitions. Fuel up at the grocery shop (bread and pastries in the morning much recommended), or with takeaways from the summer food truck to have around the site or on the dining terrace by the pool.
Camping Lac de Carcans is 15 minutes' drive from Carcans town, via a loop around the southern shore of the lake. For day trips, Bordeaux is an hour and 15 minutes away.

Local attractions
It's 15 minutes by car to Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans's main sands, Maubuisson beach, which has lifeguarded swimming in summer as well as cafés and restaurants for hours of lazing and gazing out over the water.
More beaches, on the seashore this time, are at Carcans and Lacanau, 10 and 20 minutes' drive away; the former a good bit quieter, but the latter well worth a trip too for its spectacular long beach, sand dunes and surfing.
Half an hour north, the Hourtin Dunes and Marsh National Nature Reserve covers beach, dunes and forest, and is a top pick for birdwatching and nature spotting: species to see include minks, otters, turtles and teals.
The Médoc region, home to fine wines and fine vineyards, is 45 minutes' drive inland. This lush land is also home to Fort Médoc, a 17th-century fortress that's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Citadel of Blaye, its city walls, and Fort Paté, all within an hour and a half of Camping Lac de Carcans.
