  • Small family-friendly site overlooking the Dordogne valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda; Lascaux caves 25 minutes
  • Pool, playground, café, library, local wines and artisan beers
Domaine Des Mathevies is a small, family-friendly campsite deep in the Dordogne countryside. Set in an elevated position high above the Dordogne valley, it's an excellent location to sit back and soak up the views, the peace and every last drop of summer sunshine… The grounds here are very varied, with 2.5 hectares of landscaped terracing and woodland to explore. The facilities are varied too – there's an outdoor pool, a playground, sports areas for tennis, badminton or table tennis and a small on-site library too. There's also an old barn that has been lovingly converted into a café, The Cosy Nook, where mornings are all about baguettes, croissants and coffee (which you can either have on the terrace or take back to your pitch). As the temperature rises, settle down under the shade cast by the lime trees with an ice cream or perhaps a citron pressé… And in the evening, the terrace hosts food trucks (in July and August), with different flavours on the menu every day. Vegetarian and vegan options are readily available, as are kids' portions. After dinner, you can retire to the bar, which serves artisanal beers as well as a range of Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion wines.

Liked: There’s so much to love about this campsite, I might miss some of them. It’s rustic but has everything you need. The pitches are a good size and there are options to be in shaded areas. The toilet and shower facilities are very clean and tidy (they seem to be being cleaned round the clock, which is wonderful). The pool area is clean and tidy with a choice of sun beds, chairs and parasols. Having different food vans on every night is a really nice touch if you want to have a night off with camping style cooking. There is also options to order breakfast in the morning - breads and croissants etc and a proper coffee sets you up for the morning! You are close to Sarlat, a small journey in car / camper. And all the tourist attractions in the area.

Disliked: The only thing I would like to add here is that the washing machine is 5€ for a 35 minute wash (you can get powder with this so saves you buying it). The clothes come out very hot and I couldn’t see an option to extend time or reduce temperature (apologies if you can do this and I’ve missed it) If this is the only setting I would have preferred a much lower temperature wash for a longer time

Liked: Very welcoming hosts, the facilities were very clean. The site had a lovely bar area with pop up food trucks every evening. We stayed in a very quiet plot on the edge of the site. Lovely!

Disliked: Steep drive to pitches but that adds to the experience. Wi-Fi was not the best but understandable for the area.

Liked: Can't recommend enough - we loved this campsite! very friendly atmosphere with very helpful staff. Bar and food trucks every night. Clean, great pool and playground. Great base to tour the area.

Disliked: Nothing really, but the ground was very hard on our pitch and we struggled with normal tent pegs. Luckily we had special pegs we could use.

Liked: This is a fabulous site. The website doesn’t do it justice at all. The minute we arrived we wished we were staying longer - so we did! Private pitches, great shower facilities, the pool, the bar, the location in the beautiful Dordogne. But there is just something about the atmosphere here. We loved it and will definitely be back hopefully with our young families next time.

Liked: This is a wonderful campsite in a beautiful location in the Dordogne countryside, near Sarlat, fully deserving of all the praise it receives. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, wished we had longer, and will return. On arrival we were greeted with a big smile by Tilly, who told us all about the site. We were allowed time to choose our own spot at leisure, which was appreciated. The owners are lovely people who obviously care immensely about their business, and people's enjoyment. The facilities are plentiful and immaculate at all times of day. Staff can always be seen around and about, maintaining, checking and cleaning. The pool is crystal clear and so refreshing. Children can enjoy the adjacent play park as well as the various child-friendly activities including indoor play area and table tennis. The evening food trucks, different each night, are great. We enjoyed the various tasty offerings; Indian, pizza, burgers... The bar area is really comfortable, spacious and relaxed. Chilled music plays all day. We loved it and fully recommend to all. Thank you.

Liked: Laid back ambience. Nice bar / restaurant area. Very clean bathroom facilities. Good beer. Food trucks a nice idea. Friendly, helpful staff. Bit of an Asian / tropical ambience - Kao San Rd meets SW France! All whilst wearing Boden.

Disliked: Tent pitches could have done with a little bit more shade (it was really hot). Electrical hookups were quite a distance from the pitch and not easy to find in the dark (admittedly, we should have done this earlier in the evening!)

Local attractions

This area is rich in history – in fact, the site's farmhouse was a centre for local Resistance activity during the Second World War. Along the banks of the Dordogne river, the Hundred Years' War was fought. And, in places like the caves at nearby Lascaux (25 minutes' drive) or Les Eyzies (30 minutes), early humans sheltered from the elements, leaving vivid cave paintings that have survived to this day. Les Mathevies is a hamlet to the village of Sainte-Nathalène, about 15 minutes' drive from the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda. This is the historic centre point of the Dordogne valley, with many restaurants and markets to explore – and the campsite is also within easy reach of other key tourist sites like Beynac (25 minutes), Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (30 minutes) or Domme (30 minutes), each of which is home to an impressive castle. There's also the Dordogne river itself, which can be reached within 15 minutes' drive for activities like swimming or canoeing – it’s also great for quiet time simply appreciating nature.
