  • Peaceful, family-run Dordogne campsite
  • Set in 26 acres of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin
  • On-site bar and pizzeria, outdoor pool and fishing lake
You'll feel right at home at Le Lieu, a peaceful, friendly and family-run Dordogne site in the Périgord Vert within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park. The site spreads over 26 acres of green scenery, with plenty of space for all, a private fishing lake, and woodland and riverside walks. A village shop, bar, bakery and restaurant are all in the small village of St Jory de Chalais five minutes' walk away. A swimming lake with beach is within 15 kilometres' drive. Amicable and helpful owners Lorna and Russ haven't stopped there with their tiptop facilities and amenities: Le Lieu also has an outdoor pool, a play area, free wifi, and a fully licensed bar and pizzeria. This pretty place is just the ticket for a roomy and peaceful getaway, or to use as a base for getting out into all on offer around the Dordogne. At just four kilometres from the N21, it's also a most handy stopover for travellers on their way to southern France, Spain and Portugal – but when you see what's on offer here, you'll likely want to stay at least another few days…

Power optional grass site

Liked: We lived the site its was perfect distance to where we were visiting my family. Easy to book, check in was fast and the couple running the facility were amazing. We ate in the restaurant and food was stunning we even took some back to eat later. Great atmosphere and so friendly with lovely doggy. The facilities of the site were also convenient, clean and always open. We will definitely be back

Power optional grass site

Liked: We stayed 3 nights. Hosts Julien and Charline were very welcoming to us and our two dogs. Pitches are divided by hedges and trees provide shade if needed. Very generous sizes too. Same can be said of the pizzas Julien made, and the cheeseboard! Washrooms and site were very clean and good walks for the dogs around and off site. Boulangerie a gentle 5 minute stroll in the morning. Perfect.

Disliked: Not a dislike but a small suggestion. A post near the washroom so that you can tie you dogs up while using the washrooms

Power optional grass site

Liked: Very warm welcome and helpful throughout. Amazing views on our pitch and we liked that each pitch was separated by bushes. It was reasonably quiet so had a great choice. Shower block not too far away and cleaned daily. Bar/restaurant was beautiful and food nice! We did not go into the pool as it was a little cold however it looked lovely and imagine it would be wonderful on a hot day.

Disliked: There was an event nearby pumping out loud music until late but this is absolutely not a reflection on the site. We still slept through it all and had a lovely stay!

Power optional grass site

Liked: Great size pitches, clean facilities. Lovely pool could do with some more sunbeds. Great bar and fantastic pizza. Lovely couple that own it, Julien and karianne very friendly. Very helpful as we needed a garage asap as brakes motorhome failed they help ring around and helped make sure we had explained to garage what we needed. 5minite walk to shop with fresh bread/croissant etc, they were lovely. We were staying for 3 nights ended up staying another night.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass site

Liked: Lovely friendly site in a beautiful area. The pitches are demarkated by hedging and there is lots of extra space around. The facilities are clean and well maintained. My favourite time of the day was to go for a late afternoon swim and then sit on the terrace area with a carafe of wine before going back to the pitch to cook dinner, or having a cracking pizza cooked by Julien. We were lucky to have a music night with a really great band, joined by the barman on sax. This was all accompanied by a BBQ and was a really good night with a great atmosphere. The region is lovely. We cycled around the roads and felt safe. A 10 minute drive into the lovely town of Thivier offers some shops, a fabulous market on Saturday and also a train station with trains to Limoge, Perigueux and Bordeaux. You can park for free anywhere around and the trains are cheap. A stress free way of getting around. Perigueux has a great night market in the Summer with food stalls and music. We also drove out to the Caves at Villars and the Castle at Jumilhac, both worth a visit. Charlene, Julien and Junior are great hosts, trying really hard to make everyone's holiday special. Thank you, a difficult year had meant we really needed to relax and recoup and this was the case.

Disliked: One small thing, as others have said, there are not a lot of service points, so you really do need a decent long hose and electric cable, although I believe I heard Julien say he had some extension cables.

Local attractions

The spectacular Dordogne, with its splendid landscapes and scenery, prehistoric and ancient sites, jaw-dropping châteaux and deep dark caves, is a rightly popular place in France for visitors from within the country and all over the world. And then – mais oui – there's the cuisine: make sure to make room for Dordogne duck and goose, truffles, cheese, Bergerac and Monbazillac wines… For outdoorsy days/attempts to burn off laden heaps of Dordogne eats, a swimming lake (and beach) are 15 kilometres away at Grand Étang de Saint Saud; many kilometres of cycle trails are nearby, and canoes can be hired to explore the Dronne, Vézère and Dordogne rivers. The Le Lieu owners also particularly recommend the splendid subterranean experience of Villars Cave, 14 kilometres from base, as well as the spectacular châteaux at Puyguilhem (15 kilometres) and Hautefort (30 kilometres). Within day trip distance are the World War II memorial and museum at Oradour-sur-Glane; the cathedral and Roman remains of Périgueux, and the fab medieval centre of Limoges, all within 45 kilometres. Bergerac and Sarlat are both 75 kilometres away.
