It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly farm site in the scenic Périgord Noir
- Sarlat and famed Dordogne châteaux within 15 minutes’ drive
- Pool, bar, acclaimed restaurant and cooking classes
Fancy a taste of France? Pull up to the table at Lo Gorissado, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Saint-André-d’Allas and 15 minutes from Sarlat in the stunningly scenic Aquitaine region.
Between the valleys of the Dordogne and the Vézère, the site’s well placed for exploring some of the châteaux and prehistoric sites that make this area famous – and for exploring in the present, with hot air balloon rides 15 minutes away and the hikes and bike rides of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park within 45.
Do have at least some time spent back on site: there are pleasantly leafy grounds to wander, and a pool a short stroll away from pitches for cooling dips and afternoons soaking up the sun on a lounger.
The site’s real star, however, is the restaurant: under self-taught chef Thierry Bardet, the kitchen uses fresh vegetables, herbs and edible flowers from the on-site gardens and from local producers to generate a menu that should leave guests saying ‘plus, s’il vous plait’. When meals get guests salivating, there are on-site cooking classes too – maybe new recipes are the best souvenirs…

Local attractions
Explores hereabouts have to start with a trip to the medieval town of Sarlat 15 minutes’ drive away… it’s a real stunner, with pretty buildings and winding streets in its Old Town, as well as an indoor market, a lofty cathedral, the lovely Marqueyssac gardens and fab views from the glass elevator at the Manoir de Gisson museum.
If all that whets appetites for classic French architecture, the famous châteaux in the neighbourhood should provide some satisfaction: the clifftop fortress that is Château de Beynac is 15 minutes away, as are the siege machines, arms and armour on display at Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, and it’s 20 minutes to the aviary of exotic birds at Château des Milandes, the former home of dancer Josephine Baker.
From palaces of the gentry to palaces of nature: the site’s within half an hour of Font-de-Gaume and the Lascaux caves, putting guests within easy reach of impressive geology and (arguably) even more impressive prehistoric cave paintings. The National Museum of Prehistory is 20 minutes away too, if putting both in context appeals.
That’s above and below the earth’s surface then, so what about exploring the waters? The Aquarium de Périgord Noir is half an hour from base, and has fish feedings, diving and an alligator ranch to keep even the most avid zoologists busy.
