  • On the banks of the Dordogne, five minutes' drive from Domme
  • Several châteaux within a 15-minute drive; 35 minutes to Lascaux Caves
  • Canoe hire, swimming pool, restaurant and summer activities
Perhaps you’re coming to the Périgord Noir for the hikes and outdoor activities, for the castles and gardens or to delight in the area’s famously tasty food… whichever one suits your style, Camping Beau Rivage is a fine place in which to base yourselves. For active guests, getting out on canoe trips could barely be easier – this site is right on the banks of the Dordogne with canoes to hire and a pebbly beach to paddle or swim from. There are plenty of places to hike nearby too, or to take more gentle wanders around pretty villages and natural attractions like caves and lakes. In between your Aquitaine outings, there’s plenty to keep you amused on site, including a heated outdoor aquatic complex with a 400m² main pool and a paddling area for the kids. A play area is also on hand for the smaller guests, and in summer free activities run for children between the ages of four and 12. Evening entertainment is all thrown in for free too, although you’ll be asked to pay a supplement to join one of the popular themed meals. For food at other times, pick up bits and pieces at the site shop, take a table at the site’s restaurant or head over to La Roque-Gageac or Domme (both five minutes’ drive) for more shops and places to eat.

Local attractions

Starting locally, head to Sarlat-la-Canéda (10 minutes' drive), one of the most popular corners of the Périgord Noir. Sarlat's medieval streets and gorgeous town squares draw in visitors from all over the Dordogne Valley, with highlights including its several food markets, Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral and the old stone arcades that line Place de la Liberté. For further architectural thrills, take yourself off to the Château de Beynac (15 minutes), a striking Dordogne castle in an imposing clifftop setting. The medieval village of Le Breuil (20 minutes) is good for buildings too, with well-restored round stone houses that date back to the medieval period. Curious about prehistoric interior design? You'll be in for a treat at UNESCO-listed Lascaux Caves (35 minutes), famed around the world for the 600 cave paintings discovered there in 1940. Horticultural types have options around the Aquitaine region too, starting with the elaborate topiary on display at the Jardins de Marqueyssac (10 minutes). Slightly further afield are Limeuil's aptly-named panoramic gardens (35 minutes), where there's a walled garden, several water features and views over two lovely local rivers.
