  • Riverside site in the Doller valley near the village of Masevaux
  • A 25-minute drive to Thann, southern gateway of the Alsace Wine Route
  • Free use of the local public pool, 50 metres from the site
As one should be able to see from the pics above, this is a verdant vacation spot surrounded by wooded slopes and winding waterways. It's also in the spectacularly scenic Doller valley, which means that it’s primed for outdoor activities aplenty, from hiking, cycling and mountain biking along the lakeshores and around the foothills of the Ballon d'Alsace and High Bers mountains to climbing, paragliding and ziplining from more elevated spots around the local area. The site is right next to the river for long lazy afternoons of fishing and swimming, and is a mere 50 metres from Masevaux’s public baths which have free entry for Camping de Masevaux guests. There's pétanque and ping pong for leisure on site, along with an outdoor play area and plenty of grassy space; bikes can be hired for a nominal fee. In summer you can get stuck in to the various activities that run in the village, and tap your toes to live music on site once a week. On-site foodie facilities include a small grocery shop stocked with essentials, as well as a snack bar serving quick bites and drinks during the school holidays. For when you wish to seek sustenance off site, eighth-century Masevaux village a short wander away has a supermarket, a bakery and several little independent delis, eateries and other shops. There's also a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year and a monthly farmers' market from May to September.

Liked: This is a super site. Huge pitches, all level. Nice bar / food area. Good trampoline in the site and the next door pool is fab. Although the shower block is a bit dated, it's really well designed, spacious and clean. I counted 27 sinks just in the ladies blocks, so can't imagine it ever being full. We didn't get chance to walk around Masevaux but it looked really pretty when we drove through.

Liked: We liked the location of this site, close to the town but at the end of a road so no passing traffic. Facilities were nice and clean. Our pitch was a good size. The communal pool next door is free for campers and it was great. It is indoors but there is outdoor space attached. It was very clean and tidy, the staff were lovely. We got pizza and fried chicken from the cafe, it was delicious.

Disliked: The bells, the bells, incessant bloody ringing. I know the campsite have nothing to do with the church bell, and it’s probably been ringing for like 12 centuries but I feel campers should be warned; the bells ring every quarter of an hour day and night, at 6am and 11pm for a full minute! Take ear plugs!

Liked: We have three children from 9-16. They loved it. The pool and sports facilities here are great (take your own cricket sets/footballs etc), there are walking trails and cycling trails that are within easy reach and easy/moderate. Ensure you have tight shorts/lycra for the pool, they do not allow you in the pool with baggy swim shorts. It is quiet in the evening time and the bar/restaurant closes at 8 and serves decent food. Down in Masevaux there are a few restaurants and bars along with a LeClerc and an Aldi. If you want the laid back atmosphere of France along with activities, this is the place to go. We will be back again next year!

Liked: Quiet site, beautiful location and lots of lakes/hikes to explore nearby. Friendly staff, clean and modern shower/toilet block, laundry facilities were good too

Disliked: Pool is the local sports centre and undercover, free access but extremely busy with the whole town. WiFi access poor at times.

Local attractions

The lands around the Doller valley abound with outdoor activity options – so many, in fact, that it’s unlikely you’ll manage to fit them all in. Top pursuits among both longstanding locals and visitors to these parts include hiking, cycling and mountain biking along the lake shores and across the mountains, and river fishing for carp, catfish and pike in the Doller and its tributaries. Golf is available over in Rougemont-le-Château, and braver sorts can tackle the slightly more adrenaline-inducing pursuits of climbing, paragliding and ziplining at Ballon d'Alsace mountain, 15 kilometres away. The site is conveniently placed for days out in Switzerland and Germany, whose borders both lie within 40 minutes’ drive, and the city-based attractions of Belfort and Mulhouse are a speedy 30 minutes’ drive away. For wine-themed expeditions, the southern gateway of the Alsace Wine Route lies in Thann, 25 minutes’ drive from Camping de Masevaux; visit the town’s museum before embarking on days of tasty tastings.
