All roads lead to Rømø… or at least they do from peaceful and family-friendly Ballum Camping in Southern Denmark, a quiet and shaded family site in a protected nature area among buttercup meadows, cornfields and marshland on the border between Denmark and Germany. The Rømø here is an isle, the southernmost of Denmark's Wadden Sea Islands, half an hour's drive from Ballum via Route 419 north then the Route 175 causeway west. Explorers can drift easily along to off-coast Germany too, landing on North Frisia's biggest isle Sylt within 35 minutes from Rømø from ferry – but you may prefer to mooch around Rømø for the duration instead as it's home to the widest sandy beach in northern Europe. Ballum Camping is also within walking distance of the Wadden Sea National Park, and close to plentiful walking, cycling and nature trails such as the North Sea Cycle Route running alongside the site. Its Tønder Municipality location is about 20 minutes' drive from the small town of Bredebro, 15 minutes from a bowling alley, an indoor waterpark and an outdoor go-karting track, and – to build a full family day – 90 minutes from Legoland Billund. Facilities at Ballum include a TV lounge, a playground and a small convenience store selling everyday groceries and freshly baked bread. Among the amenities are a heated bathroom block, a baby bathroom, several family bathrooms, a laundry room with washers and dryers, an outdoor kitchen and a well-equipped indoor kitchen.

Liked Fabulous campsite with welcoming owners. We arrived after reception had closed and all our cards and electric meter was left in the mailbox for our arrival. Lovely clean bathrooms and an o site shop.Stunning well kept site with rich nature. Sat out till 10pm just listening to the birds. A little slice of heaven.

Liked Ein sehr gepflegter und mit Liebe betriebener Platz. Wir haben nichts vermisst. Toll fanden wir die App, über die man alles regeln konnte.
Die Betreiber sprechen deutsch und waren supernett. Sie waren sehr kulant, als wir uns bei der Buchung vertan hatten. Vielen Dank nochmals dafür!

Disliked Es gibt eigentlich nichts zu beanstanden.
Es war nur etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, dass die sanitären Anlagen für Männlein und Weiblein nicht richtig getrennt waren.

Liked Eigentlich alles. Sauber, freundlich, große Parzellen, leckere Brötchen früh, Food Trucks kommen vorbei, abends kann man Pizza bestellen, kleiner Shop. Man kann mit Hund auch wunderbar Gassi gehen und es gibt einen Freilauf. Insel Rømø in 15 Minuten Entfernung mit dem Auto.

Local attractions

Ballum Camping is in an area of protected marshland popular for birdwatching and nature spotting, and is within walking distance of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park. Rudbøl nature reserve, part of the national park, is the breeding ground for bird species aplenty from spring through to autumn when they fly south for winter. The island of Rømø is home to northern Europe's widest sandy beach, where there are plenty of options for watery activities such as surfing, sailing and windsurfing. The island's also covered in forests popular for hiking, dog walking and nature spotting. Neighbouring Sylt, the biggest German island in the North Sea, has a spectacular 40-kilometre beach and a railway causeway to mainland Germany at Niebüll and Klanxbüll. For a spot of history, visit the museum mills at the 13th-century Trøjbort castle ruins (10 minutes), or the historic cities of Tønder, Møgeltønder and Ribe, 25, 30 and 35 minutes away.
