Set between two pebbly bays on the northern Adriatic island of Lošinj, this coastal site in Croatia is a rather fine spot for family-focused breaks. Here, the whole island is yours for the taking – the quieter bits like its hidden coves, old fishing villages and hilltop vistas, but also top tourist attractions like the Čikat Aquapark and a ferry port for further island-hopping… SunLodge at Camping Village Poljana has a collection of well-equipped static caravans, all of which are fully self-contained and located in peaceful parts of the park. The far-reaching views over the sea and leafy local countryside mean that you could very well just stick to snoozing on your terrace, but on-site leisure activities like bike hire, fishing, tennis and watersports are on hand for when you're in a more active mood. Other perks of staying here include access to an on-site laundry room and a food shop for basic holiday supplies. A pizzeria is also available for when you fancy breaking out from your self-catering meal prep routine. Things feel truly remote at Camping Village Poljana, but in fact you can get around the surrounding area pretty easily by car or bike. Handily, the site is just on the edge of Mali Lošinj, a scenic town with a large natural harbour, shops and restaurants.

Local attractions

This seaside site is roughly a two-hour drive from the mainland, but don't let that put you off – there's plenty to see and do in this archipelago of gorgeous islands. Starting locally, you might like to cycle down to Veli Lošinj (five kilometres), an old fishing town with an array of pretty buildings, cafés, restaurants and shops. Scuba diving experiences are also available here. Want to continue taking it easy? Walk 20 for minutes and you’ll reach the Museum of Apoxyomenos in Mali Lošinj, home to an ancient bronze statue that was salvaged from the seabed in the 1990s (few museums based around a single exhibit are quite as captivating as this). Afterwards, take the kids to blow off steam at the nearby Čikat Aquapark (10 minutes' drive), or opt for sweet-smelling times pottering around Lošinj's very own aromatic garden (five minutes). This wildlife haven island is well-known locally for its dolphins. If you haven't yet spotted any of their playful antics from the shore, you can always take advantage of the several nature-spotting boat cruises that are available in the local area.
