  • Peaceful, leafy campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Calarcá in Quindío
  • Central to the coffee region; 45 minutes’ drive from Filandia
  • Vegetable garden and restaurant serving zero-miles produce on site
When all you want is peace and quiet, pack your bags and make haste to Ecohotel Alma, set in spectacular leafy countryside and backed by the peaks of the Andes mountain range. Close to the Pan-American Highway and 10 minutes’ drive from Calarcá in the department of Quindío, this small, cosy eco-hotel and its pitches sits in the middle of Colombia’s coffee region. With a range of accommodation for both campers and glampers, this rural hideaway is run on sustainable lines, with the owners recycling wherever possible, composting and growing organically in their vegetable gardens – the produce goes straight into the restaurant alongside locally grown ingredients for almost-total zero-miles dishes on the menu. Topped with a soaring wooden roof and prettily lit up at night, the open-air restaurant serves breakfast and evening meals (please order supper before 3pm) daily. Elsewhere in the verdant grounds, you can make new friends around the communal firepit, or simply take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous alpine views. Anything you’re running out of? You should be able to track it down in the shopping centres of Calarcá.

Local attractions

Number one on your Quindío bucket list may well be a guided tour of the coffee region, where you will visit a coffee plantation, drink some exceptional coffee and maybe buy some coffee to take home with you. A side trip might take you to the colourfully painted houses of Filandia (45 minutes’ drive), where you have a choice of coffee shops on every corner. If you’re travelling with the kids, be sure to treat them to a day at Parque del Café (40 minutes), a coffee-themed amusement park with interactive and educational exhibits as well as high-octane rollercoaster rides. There’s more learning to be done at Quindío Botanical Garden (10 minutes), where you can explore the butterfly house and watch minuscule hummingbirds flit among jungle greenery. If you’d prefer to go exploring on foot, head for the Cocora Valley (about an hour), where you can hike among super-tall, spindly wax palm trees in the spectacularly beautiful cloud forest. Alternatively, hire a guide to point out the birdlife of Acaime Nature Reserve (an hour and 15 minutes), where nature trails take you across precarious bridges hanging above river gorges.
